Do you let your 3 year old ride in a stroller whenever they want?

I don't but I wonder if I'm not being fair.  I will let him if he's obviously tired (after say half a mile I can tell he's tired).  But sometimes he wants to get in there the second we leave the house and I don't allow it.

WDYD?

  • Yes, but Ethan gets really bad stomachaches from walking sometimes, so if he asks, I let him.

  • We have a Sit N Stand LX & I do let our 3 1/2 year old hop in there whenever she wants.  It's about 1/2 of the time that she does.
  • I would but my kid won't ride in a stroller at all.  I'd bribe him to ride in one so I wouldn't have to constantly be telling him to keep up, stay with me, hold my hand, etc.

  • DD rides in the jogger when we take the dogs on a daily walk.  I just want to get the walk done (and the dogs don't really get the best exercise with her wandering pace).  Otherwise, she walks.  I don't even bring a stroller anywhere anymore.  I want her to walk and wear herself out.

Shall be interesting when the next child arrives.  Because I don't let her ride much, it's novel for her and I think she might "regress" into wanting to ride all the time.

  • At 3 I let DD ride whenever she wanted.

  • I haven't been able to get dd to sit in a stoller since she started walking unless she is completely exhausted.  I would jump at the chance to not be chasing every where.

  • I try to not bring it at all but if I have to bring a diaper bag it's a PITA to have DD on my back and the bag on my shoulder.  It's easier to push the bag in the stroller and then have it for DS, too if he's tired.  We're about a mile from town and while he can walk that far.. I know that he does get tired and I want to respect that.

I really just like him to tire himself out. It's good for his mood.  And I hate to see older kids in strollers!  Physical issues excepted, of course.

He was the same way but since Sara started riding in there on occasion he's into it again.

  • My DD rides most of the time.  She is the average height of a 2 year old, so her capacity to walk is somewhat limited.  I think a 1/2 a mile is about the most I could expect out of her from a physical standpoint.  Since we tend to walk to playdates and parks, for her to walk there and then play, would be a lot.  We walk a lot, 3 to 5 miles a day, so she is not going to be keeping up with that.  Also, a lot of the places we go, it is safer for her to be in the stroller, since we cross lots of streets.
  • K&K were 3 in May and still ride in the double when we are on shopping trips.  No if and or buts my stroller saves my sanity!

L who is 4 will ask to ride when he is really tired.  I do allow him to.  We may start trying to wean from the stroller but it scares me to think of being out with them all walking and no stroller.  SO I may be one of those people with huge 4yr olds (well, not really the girls are tiny for their age) still riding in a stroller.

  • I wish!

B stopped going in the stroller soon after she turned ONE!

  • I would if he wanted to, but 99% of the time he wants to walk, which also means Colin wants to walk. I do bring the stroller w/ me to the mall, zoo, etc. If we go to the park, no stoller.

This. If we are at the mall or something though, I only bring the single and she walks.?

  • I'm one of those who doesn't see anything wrong w/ a 3-4 year old in a stroller. DD could take it or leave it, I generally have to tell her we get in. I'm not sure why you wouldn't let him sit in it when he wants to? For exercise? As a toddler I'm sure he gets loads of exercise by just *being.*

Ditto this.  And, for me, it's more about keeping them under control or me wanting to walk at something faster than a snail pace.  they get plenty of exercise and wear themselves out in other ways.  But, if I am just bringing a single stroller, I will usually let his sister ride in it and let him push it (with much help from me) to keep him occupied and out of trouble.
