Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Too old for colic so what gives?

For the past few days like clockwork DS will start SCREAMING at 5:30/5:45. He has been fed, is dry, taken a nap, everything is status quo but he still screams. I end up having to take him outside to get him to stop screaming. It goes on for about an hour on and off. He is past the colic stage so I don't get it. Anyone else?

Re: Too old for colic so what gives?

  • He's not necessarily passed the colic stage.  One of our LOs is doing the same thing right now.  He's completely fine except for the screaming.  I'm hoping it's more from a growth spurt (which happens around 4 months) than colic, but it is possible for colic to stick around for up to a year.  I think I read 60% of babies are done with it by 3 months and 80% by 6 months.  The rest can take up to 12 months to get over it.

Hang in there.  It's so stressful, believe me, I understand.

  • maybe he needs an extra nap during the day? not too old for colic. i've talked to moms who have had babies with colic that continued until 5 months!
  • I would say he's either teething...or bored.  Taking him outside either helps with the boredom, or takes his mind off his gums/teeth hurting?  I would ask your pedi though...I'm no doctor.

  • I asked the pedi if he was teething and they said no that they didn't see any teeth coming in. I guess I would call it colic if he had it from the beginning but it just started and it is like nothing makes him happy at that time.
  • Maybe he needs more to eat?

    have you tried gripe water?

I agree that it could also be boredom

  • sounds like the witching hour and/or 4 month wakeful to me and it's very normal. at 4 months, babies are now so aware of their surroundings that by the end of the day they just have stimulation overload. you can try getting him down for a nap just before his usual cranky period so he sleeps through it or take him for a walk or car ride, whatever activity helps him zone out and relax.
