Am I a paranoid mom?

Hay ladies,

DS is getting blessed at DH's childhood church this weekend (which I am not happy about, but that is another story).  DS will be just shy of 6 weeks old and there will be a lot of people there that I don't know.  I am not comfortable with non-family members holding DS because he is so little and I am afraid he will get sick (especially since people who get the flu can be sick 24 hours before having symptoms).  DH thinks I am being paranoid and that people will want to hold the baby and we should let them.  I think that if it is our friends/family at our house who we can regulate (e.g. have wash hands before holding baby) it is fine - but a church full of people is not okay.

Am I being overprotective?

Re: Am I a paranoid mom?

  • No, you're not being over protective. He's still very young, and this is prime flu season.

You could even joke it off, and say "Call me overprotective mommy, but I'd prefer to hang on to him with all the flu germs floating around". People will either respect your decision or they'll scoff at you...what's the big deal?

  • Yes you're being overprotective but with good reason!  I wouldn't want a bunch of people passing my baby around either.  Just try to keep him in the car seat or a carrier as much as possible.  Obviously people are gonna want to hold him...but if you've got him in a moby (or something similar)...it would be more difficult for them to ask.  Good luck!

  • I don't think so. Maybe bring some purell or wipes and just explain that it's flu season. If they really want to hold the baby, they'll comply. I mean, yes, you can't ALWAYS protect them from everything, but still...

Although I purell at mass after the peace-be-with-yous (discreetly, ofcourse)

But maybe I'm over protective, too

  • Your child, your rules. That being said, I've never limited who can hold DD (well, okay my 2 year old niece can't hold her), and I don't make anyone wash their hands before they take her either. If they want her, they can have her! Even as early as 1 day old...

  • I would limit the holding to close family/friends and bring a large bottle of hand sanitizer that everyone who touches the baby must use (it's not as good as washing hands, but it's better than nothing).  I would also discourage people touching the LO's mouth.  I don't think you're being paranoid--the fall flu season is going to be starting up, and it's especially dangerous for babies.
  • I am the same way. I don't like people I don't know well holding DD...now she's at the age where she prefers to play and doesn't like to just be held. I wore her in a wrap lots and breastfed her in public so there was usually very little opportunity for anyone to hold her (unless at our house). You could just say DS gets upset, or makes strange. And whoever you do pass DS to, ask them not to pass him along to anyone else, and stay close by. Just say DS gets fussy after a while, and if he gets passed around a lot then he is fussy later and harder to put down for bed. Or, be honest and say with the flu season upon us, you would rather not pass her around, just to be safe (and say your pedi recommeneded this).....

  • I don't think you are being paranoid.  I keep DD in her car seat carrier at church and people usually don't ask to hold her.  They do like to lean down to look at her and poke her cheeks but I keep lots of handi wipes around and wipe her down from time to time.   Or do you have a sling you could put him in?  People usually don't ask that you remove a baby from those.
  • I don't think you are being overprotective at all.  I went to a funeral this weekend and while I didn't let anyone hold DD aside from my mom and dad, I myself somehow got sick from someone else!!  It's primetime for sickness and your LO is so young still.  People can just get over it - you are protecting your daughter.
