I have this horrible fear that because I plan to work until he arrives that I will go into labor at work. I've been questioning how I will handle the situation if my water breaks and how horrifying it will be for me. Anyone else worrying about this?
My coworker had her water break while at work. I don't have a fear about it. I've already talked to my boss and she said she would drive me to the hospital if anything happens while I'm here.
Actually, I'm better off going into labor at work. Nate's office is only 10 minutes away, vs 30 minutes away if I was at home.
I'm 25 minutes closer to the hospital, plus there's always an MD & nurses here on site. Should something wacky happen, there is medical transportation or one of my coworker's will take me.
I'm horrified at the idea of my water breaking anywhere other than my house. I have this mental image of my water breaking in the grocery store aisle hearing the words "clean up on Aisle 3" being broadcast over the PA.
Just make sure you have a back-up plan for what will happen if you do go into labor at work. Someone to drive you to the hospital if your water breaks, etc. What do you do?
I'm an elementary school teacher and I envision the kids being really confused if it looks like I had an accident... haha
I plan to work till LO arrives as well. I also have this fear my water will break at work. My co worker said she'll drive me to the hospital if I need her to. My brother works down the street so he can take me too.
If my water does break in the office, I do have an extra pair of pants and a towel. DH works 5mins from home so he can go home and pick up the hospital bag. My work is about 30mins from the hosptial and DH will be about 30 mins from the hosptial as well so we'll prob. get there at the same time. Actually, a couple of weeks ago my dr. told me to go into the hospital. I was at work and DH was at work. We both left at the same time and both got to the hospital at the same time.
I share this fear, not because of my coworkers but because of our clients. I am so nervous that labor is going to start or my water will break while I am running group therapy or with a client...all the teens are clearly mental ill and would have no sensor and be extra dramatic and would tell everyone they encounter the story. They do that when staff do anything drop a piece of paper, spill a drink, etc. So I can't imagine how ridiculous it would be if my water broke.
MH and I have a plan for if I go into labor at work. First, don't assume that your water will break when labor starts, as it often does not (it never did with my DD). I would stash an extra change of clothes at work just in case and try not to worry. Just make sure that you have an idea of how you will get to the hospital if you need to go right away, but there again, don't stress about it b/c it is highly unlikely that you will progress so quickly that you will go from the 1st contractions of labor pains straight to "Holy crap, get me to the hospital!" Most likely, you'll start having contractions and just go home to labor until you are ready for the hospital.
DH and I work for the same company and we're in the same building so I'm pretty lucky if I were to go into labor at work he's right down the hall. Plus, we're only 10 minutes from the hospital. I'm not too worried about my water breaking at work. I'm sure if it happens, I'll be so excited it's finally time that I won't give a rip. Sorry to the folks that have to clean it up if it's a gush!
Just plan in advance. Have a change of clothes at your office/car/locker, and make sure your husband is ready and available to be reached at any time. Have your hospital/labor bags all packed and ready to go so that they can just be thrown into the car (or you can even have them already in the car).
Also, the majority of women have contractions then their water breaks. It's not nearly as common for your water to break before you have any contractions.
Good luck!

I hope that I don't go into labor while I am at work, although it would actually be convenient since I work where I go to the doctor. If I were going into labor, I could go right upstairs to the dr because they want you to come into the office unless it's after hours anyways. On top of that, the hospital is right across the street from work. I am worried that I will go into labor and not be able to get a hold of my husband since he works 3rd shift, he sleeps during the day and I'm afraid I won't be able to wake him up- or he will be at work if it happens in the middle of the night, and I won't be able to reach him. I am more worried about When/where I go into labor rather than actual delivery!

This exactly! I work in psych as well. I'm not worried about the logistics of getting to the hospital, it's not far from home or work. I do have an extra pair of pants and a pad stashed as work in case.
I def have this fear. I am the staff attorney for a judge in New Orleans - I would be mortified if my water broke in court. I am just hoping I am one of the many whose water does not break on its own.
