labor and delivery and mother's history

How would my mother's L+D history relate to my possible experience, if at all? Everyone tells me that LO will be past her EDD because most first time labors are long and occur late. My mom had both me and my brother (no other siblings) 2-3 weeks early and barely made it to the hospital in time. I'm wondering if this indicates that LO will also be early (and hopefully with a short labor!)

Re: labor and delivery and mother's history

  • I sure do hope so- my mom had short, unmedicated labors both times.  But we were both late.

  • That's funny you mention this, because a coworker was just talking to me about the same thing not even 10 minutes ago. She said her doctor told her to ask her mom about her first delivery, because hers would probably be similiar...and it was.

I'm not sure how accurate it is, but my pregnancy has been fairly easy and uneventful (not even any m/s!) so far, as was my mom's pregnancy with me. I know I was born 2 weeks early, but now I'm thinking I should find out what kind of L&D she had with me as well.

  • Well, you're lucky if that's the case! I was 3 weeks late and my mom had labor pains the whole time and was induced for 3 days before they took pity on her and gave her a c/s... if that's my fate...Indifferent

  • Yes, I've heard a midwife say (well, read in a book that she said) women will very often labor like their mothers.
  • I think it can sometimes be a factor in how your labor will go. I know I was hoping for labor like my moms with DS b/c her longest labor out of 4 kids was 8 hours...mine was 30. So based on my experience I'd say to remember you are your own person and will have your own labor experience.

  • i asked my dr this, my dr said "you need to remember every pregnancy and every woman is different."

so, just because my mom had me 4 weeks late (yeah.. nuts) does not mean i will go late (they obv. don't let you go that long these days)

  • I've heard this too. I don't think I'll have the same L&D as my mom though. She's very short and petite, so it was difficult for her to push us out. I'm about 6 inches taller then her and not as petite, so I think (and hope!) I won't have as hard a time pushing him out! We'll see in 4 months, I guess.

  • I'm hoping it's not an indicator in my case - my mom had to have an emergency section for me because I was breech.  My sister followed suit and had a (planned) section because her son was breech. I am built completely different than my mom and sister (I take after my dad's side of the family) and hoping that this will play in my favor!

  • I am really hoping this to be true...my moms first one was 12 hours long and I think med free. I heard the avg. 1st time mother goes 15-18 hours so I hope mine is like my mothers.
  • I seriously hope that isn't the case. My mother developed really bad toxemia, was on bed rest for 3 months, labored for 18 hours, and I was born a month and a half early. She doesn't remember much about the actual labor because she was so out of it, and she doesn't remember anything after because she was unconscious.
  • My mother's didn't relate to mine at all unfortunately.  Well except for being two weeks late.  My mom had six kids, all of us were at least 2 weeks past EDD and most were induced.  She had very short labors (I was born in less than 2 hours) with her longest being 12 hours.  She delivered large babies (smallest 8.5 and the largest 10.9) all vaginally.

I went 10 days past edd and was induced, twice (the first failed) and then after 26 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing, ds hadn't dropped into my pelvis and I developed a fever.  I ended up with an emergency c/s.

our were not similar at all... I was a week late and my mom only dilated to 3 or 4 and had to have a C/S..  DS was 2 days early and I was dilated to 10 before my water broke, very easy labor and pushed 45 minutes or so... so thankfully I didn't get stuck being like my mom.

  • I don't think they have any bearing on your labor and deliveries.  My mom went 2 wks late with me, 2wks late with my sis.  So far, all my kids have been 2 days early or on their due date.  And my labor lengths have been completely different too.
  • It wasn't in my case.

    Mom's LD:  DS1 - 24hrs, was 4wks late.  DD2 (me)- 1 Hr TOTAL, a little early.  DS3 - 90min total LD, early

    My LD (so far):  DS1 - 26hrs, 2 days late.  DS2 - 16 hrs, 5 days early (induced due to pre-e).  DS3 - 6.5 hrs, induced, 2 days late.

  • My mom had two c-sections due to my brother and I being breech....I'd really like to avoid that but we'll see! So, far we've had almost identical pregnancies with minimal symptoms.

    this exactly!
  • I've got to believe that there can be some similarities, as long as you realize that you're a combination of your mother and your father.

I'm built a lot like my mom, so at least from a bone structure standpoint, I believe vaginal birth shouldn't be an issue.  I also have a tilted uterus like mom and have always had ca-razy menstrual cramps like Mom.  All things that make me feel like I'll have a 'babies came a week to 10 days before their due dates and I spent 4-6 hours in labor' birth.  I like to tell myself this no matter how pie-in-the-sky it may be.

  • My mom's first was 2 weeks late.  She was put out at the time because the military OB didn't want to be an OB, so he insisted that all patients were knocked out because he didn't want to deal with mom's in labor.  My bother was almost 10 pounds.

Her second (me) was induced.  Once she was givent he pitosin, she progressed very quickly (to the point that she almost delivered without the doctor).  I was under 8 lbs.

My first was 9lb 7oz, 2 days early.  I was given pitosin to push things along (I started contractions...40 minutes from hospital and there was a snowstorm in the forecast so they gave me the pitosin to push things along a bit and not have to send me home and have me stuck in the storm.)  Like my mom, I reacted quickly to the pitosin.

So similarities (1st baby big & pitosin works quick) and differences (didn't go late).

I'm hoping that my second is also smaller, because a large baby will mean a c-section for me as my son broke his collar bone on the way out and he doesn't want to chance that this time.
