3rd Trimester

second baby the worst pregnancy?

I'm just curious what you all think about this. I'm having a lot more of the uncomfortable, painful pregnancy related things happening this time around (tons of swelling, cramps, rlp, etc) than I did last time. I know I was really lucky last time to avoid a lot of this stuff, but when I was talking to one of the midwives at my OB's office about it, she said overwhelmingly she sees women with the second pregnancies way worse than the first. she even said the second seems to be worse than third, fourth, etc.

I just thought that was weird and wanted to see what any of you thought who are going through their second or higher pregnancy? I know it's definitely true for me (as I sit here with my dinosaur feet)!

Re: second baby the worst pregnancy?

  • I'm at week 32 of my second pregnancy ( also having 2 under 2) and just like my first pregnancy I have nothing to complain about.

  • Not true for me as of yet (knock on wood). I had m/s longer this time, but it was milder as far as how much I got sick. My boobs hurt this time, and they didn't last time. And I pee more this time than last time. But that is about the only difference. Otherwise the pregnancies have been easy for both.

  • I couldn't agree more! My first pregnancy was a breeze. This one has way more aches, pains, issues, symptoms....etc.. etc...
  • I'm on my third, and this is definitely worse than ever.  Second was worse than first, etc. Lots of swelling, pressure, and my belly got big basically right away.  Oh, the glamour.
  • That hasn't been the case for me at all. This is has been the easiest pregnancy and really up until the last week or so I haven't been uncomfortable at all. My first pregnancy was awful, I was borderline pre-e and had severe swelling. I was put on moderate bedrest at 32 weeks and full bedrest at 34 weeks. I was so uncomfortable and ?so miserable! This time I've hardly felt pregnant because I've had very little symptoms. Though I will say it is tougher in the third trimester only because I have a 2 almost 3yr old to chase around!

That'd be nice. I've had more uncomfortable pregnancy symptoms this time around, have been more tired, more achey and more threats of preterm labor. Part of what what makes the second pregnancy rough, I think is chasing an active toddler. We're in the home stretch though.

  • This is my 2nd pregnancy and it's by far the easiest. I've barely had any symptoms. The only thing I've had to complain about is my zero interest in sex.
  • Each have been worse for me, this one particularly because I have two at home, one under 2 most of pg and who needed soooo much more attention than my 3.5 year old (now almost 6 yr old) did when I was pg with his sis. Everything got bigger faster, and until the last week, I've been unable to move and been so exhausted that I just was a wreck. Things are looking up here at the end though. My DD (2nd pg) was a crazy mover and kicker, which hurt worse than this one though. This dude is lazy, like his big bro was in the womb.

    Good luck!

  • Some things are better this time like swelling. I'm also not fat like I was during my first pregnancy. Well not fat but definitely overweight. My sciatic and my hip pain is much much worse than lat time. I'm a lot more active this time than I was last time and I think that helps. I had a couple hours of contx a couple weeks ago where last time I didn't even have bh let alone actual contx. My doctor told me I'm going to feel everything much sooner and will feel 40w at 30w. The pelvic pain and pressure is really hard this time too. So far I don't have any back pain. I think that's due to the fact that I'm pretty physically fit and have good ab muscles.
  • My first pregnancy was complicated. My second has been super easy. With my first, I didn't have any contractions until the induction started. With this one, I started dilating at 32 weeks. Overall, the second has been much better, despite the contractions.
  • My first 2 pregnancies weren't bad but this third one has been really tough.  A few of my friends have said the same thing, that their 3rd was the worst and the ones that have had a 4th say that one was better!

  • My first pregnancy wasn't that easy but this one is definitely 10 times harder.
  • Yes.. this one is way harder than my first. ?I felt great almost the entire time, I did have m/s.. but it was much worse this time. I've had a chronic cough since around 16w.. and I can't get rid of it.?

I'm so tired I can't hardly get my house ready for baby..

Overall I'm almost done with this pregnancy. I do not, repeat, I DO NOT want her to come now.. I just want to kinda sleep until Nov. lol. Maybe like a deep-sleeping-beauty type sleep, lol. ?

  • 3rd is taking the cake for me...i loved being pregnant the first 2 times and even had a hard pregnancy with #1 but now haivng issues with #3 and with 2 little ones to take care of on top of that leaves one tired mommy!! hang in there!
  • I have to agree. I don't feel as good this time around. I had m/s longer, my boobs hurt and did not hurt with DS, I pee so much more (especially in the middle of the night), my sciatica is killing me and I didn't have this with DS either and I have the worst indigestion and I have never had that in my life. This time around I also have way more Braxton Hicks and was hospitalized at 25 weeks for PTL. I would have to say this pregnancy is way more difficult but of course worth it!
  • Overall, my first was probably the worst for me.  I had m/s with all three but the first was the absolute worst with this last pregnancy being a close second.  With the first, I also had to have a hemi removed within 2 weeks of giving birth.  It was not a fun pregnancy!  This one is rough as well, but mostly because I'm quite a bit older I think.
  • Definitely true for me! My first pregnancy was a breeze. I could have been PG forever. This time it's been pretty bad and I'm so beyond ready to not be PG (and yet not ready for baby just yet ;).

My OB told me the same thing, that the second pregnancy tends to be harder then the 1st. However, she said that each pregnancy tends to get harder and stronger "symptoms", not that the 2nd would necessarily be worse then later ones.

  • Overall my pregnancies have been progressively worse than the one before.  Exception to this is the swelling- I had some swelling with DD1 but none with DD2 or with DD3.
  • I wouldn't say that this one is worse. I had more m/s this time around, but other than that there have been no real problems. The hardest thing is not being able to lay down and take a nap whenever I want. I have a toddler now, so I have to keep up with him.
  • This pg has been a bit worse. The first was pretty easy, looking back. The only complaint I had then was that DD was up in my ribs for the last month or two and sleeping was really uncomfortable. This time, I had 3 weeks of m/s, I'm terribly swollen from the calves down (feet look like Fred Flinstone), the back pain is debilitating most days, I've been having BHs for weeks now (never had any with pg 1) and I've been dilating much quicker (since at least week 36 I've been at a 2 and now am at a 3). I definitely think a lot of the aches and pains this time are from chasing/picking up DD. I definitely don't get to rest nearly as much as I did with pg 1. But, I'm nearly at the end! :)

  • As far as pain wise yes, alot worse than with DS.  But with DS I had alot of swelling, I always had some kind of protien in my urine, and the start of carpul tunnel.    My onbly real complaint is the shooting pain down my crotch!!

  • I agree.  I am 36 weeks with my second pregnancy and this one is more painful than the first.  I was smooth sailing with both the first and second trimesters, but being near the end, there is definitely a lot more pressure, my pelvic area hurts when I walk or get up, I had preterm labor with this one that has caused me to be on bed rest.  My OB said the second, third, etc... pregnancies are worse as far as pressure and pelvic pain than the first.
  • For me this has been worse. Not sure if it's the heat. I have swelling, tailbone pain, and feel like I have been hit with a baseball bat between my legs. The swelling has been for a long time now. The other issues have started about a week ago. I had an amazing pregnancy with DS. Only issue was RLP, which I have not had this time.
