NBR:mom got a parking citation outside my ashburn home

I can't believe it! I own a townhouse in Ashburn and I'm pretty close to the end of the street with no pass through. My mom has been parking right outside my house and two nights ago she got a parking citation! I'm sure someone must have called her in. I live on a very quiet street and she was not in anybody's way!  There is ample parking and everyone has a two car garage as well as a driveway. When she's not parked there, the space stayws empty.

I called the office of the treasurer and spoke to someone who said that she would get the citation even if she was parking in my driveway! They said I needed to get a Loudoun county decal for her and that she got the ticket because she parked there 4 nights in a row. My mom has been a great help and will be here half of the time helping me take care of my baby- but she lives in Fairfax County. The decal is only 25 bucks, but I can't believe Loudoun county has the manpower to police my neighborhood for 4 straight nights. I'm sure a bi-polar neighbor up the block with too much time on his hands called.

Sorry- had to vent....

  • I don't think they can actually cite you in your own driveway (they can police only public areas generally), so I would have her park there.  To fight the citation, I would have your mom write a letter explaining why she was there and give proof that she doesn't live in Loudoun (check the statute, but generally you have to have the decal if you live there or spend most nights or something).  They may very well waive the citation for special circumstances, but have her park in your driveway after this!
  • Loading the player...
  • that is ridiculous...what if you had friends from out of town staying with you for a week or 2? they have to register their car with Loudoun County? How dumb.... And I agree with pp that you should have her park in your driveway, I don't think they can give parking tickets to cars on private property.
  • I forgot that this happened to me in Loudoun until reading your post.

DH used to live in South Riding and I was not a Loudoun resident.  Same thing--I got a citation for parking at his t/h regularly.

If I remember correctly, the citation was just that--a warning with no fees.  I called Loudoun, explained that I was a PW County resident and exhibiting a PW County decal, and they left me alone after that...

  • That's ridiculous!

But congratulations on your baby! I'm really happy for you - she's gorgeous!

    This.

    How ridiculous.

  • As a District resident, we always had to get parking permits for guests.  Annoying, but helpful in managing street parking.  I now Loudon is not the District.  If it makes you feel better, street parking is not allowed in the small town I grew up in NJ.  You have to call the police for a special exception.
