2nd Trimester

Pets

We own a cat and a dog while we aren't worried so much as to how the dog with handle our expectant baby we are worried about the cat.  We have heard things about cats getting in cribs etc.  Has anyone else dealt with this and what were the outcomes.  We love our pets more than anything but if they are a danger we may have to make adoption arrangements. :-(

Re: Pets

  • They won't be a danger so long as you monitor all of their interactions with the baby.  My pets will never be alone with the baby, we are doing this for our child's protection.  They have nets and tents for cribs to prevent cats from getting in, but so long as you are a vigilant pet owner there shouldn't be a problem.

  • She is very scarce as it is when it comes to people interaction but we were more worried about when both of us are sleeping late at night and unable to watch.  I will have to look into the tent.  Thanks
  • We have a cat too and a friend of ours told us to assemble the crib a month or so earlier and line the mattress with aluminum foil.  Seems that cats hate foil and after jumping in a few time and landing on it, they'll stop going near it.  So that's what we're planning on doing.  Well and of course watching the cat too.

  • I will ditto what Vishenka69 said. Get the nursery set up as soon as you can, and put something into the crib that will scare the cat.

I would also ask this on the pets board, those ladies have all kinds of ideas on how to get animals used to babies. Here is a blog post I have been referencing frequently as we go along.

  • I wasn't too worried about my male cat when I had DD (I only had one at the time) but I am worried about my two girl kitties because they don't know. I put balloons in DD's crib after I got it put together until she came to keep him out of it and it worked. I don't know how well that will work out this time, tho...

  • We also have 2 cats and started to wonder how they will interact with the baby.  The one LOVES little kids and the other just keeps her distance.  I know A LOT of people that have cats and babies and not one has ever had a problem with the cat getting into the crib (my parents included!) so I'm not really worried.

If you are concerend, I would suggest looking into one of those tents that goes on top of the crib.  You can also set up the crib early to get the cat used to the new piece of furniture.   I've read about someone filling the crib with balloons before the baby came so if the cat jumped in, the balloons woudl scare him/her and not get back in.

  • We have 2 cats. I was also worried about them getting in the crib. We decided to get the crib set up a few months ahead of DD's birth and just watch to see what they did around it, and check the sheet for cat hair. They never tried to get in it. Once we brought DD home, they didn't want anything to do with her. Our oldest cat is still the only one that will go around her at all, but neither ever went in the crib.

I have just the one dog.. and I have a good feeling that she's going to be an excellent "nurse helper" when the baby is here.  I babysat for a friend's newborn earlier in the year when she had to go to a work meeting, and Morgan stayed by my feet the whole time, and when the baby was crying and I was walking him around trying to calm him, she was at my heels looking up like "Oh, mommy what's wrong with it???"

    Haha.
