I am due in early January and just browsed baby furniture for the first time. I am a bit overwhelmed and hoping you can help. We live in NYC and have a separate (small) nursery. I don?t know what furniture I really need. I was told I need a crib, bassinet, pack-n-play, and 1-3 strollers as the baby goes from newborn to toddler. This will NEVER fit in our NYC apartment, even though it?s quite spacious! What pieces can do double duty? The bassinettes I was shown, even in NYC, are half the size of my queen bed! Thanks!
Re: NYC nursery furniture questions
I personally don't think a bassinet is needed. My baby slept in the pack n play (the newer ones have the top) for the 1st month than he slept in his crib. And honestly...the PNP is under my bed. If you want you can skip the PNP and just get alittle bassinet. You don't need a changing table..you can get a dresser and just screw the changing pad on it. I'm not sure what you mean by the 1-3 stroller. maybe you mean the travel systems? which are huge...I have the bugaboo..which comes with the bassinet for the babies and than turns into the toddler sitting position also. You can also purchase the carseat adapter for it. Which was great! Alot of the strollers have the same options. Buy Buy Baby is a great place to get lots of answers. Their customer service is great.
Good luck!
I would skip the bassinet & PNP. ?You can get a small moses basket at Buy Buy Baby if you need to keep the baby ?in your room to breastfeed for the 1st month. ?If you go to Schneider's Furniture, they have a lot of "double duty" furniture & different sizes (they're in Chelsea). ?For the stroller, why not just get one, & get a car seat converter for it that enables you to put an infant car seat/baby carrier on it when the baby is still an infant? You can get the city mini stroller, & then add the converter to it.
I also recommend not getting a changing table- just get the changing table pad & attach it to a dresser.?

Good luck!?
We got a "mini crib" which helps a bit with space (they're also less expensive). The baby can outgrow it a little sooner, but since we don't know if we'll still be in our apartment 18 months after the baby's born, we didn't worry about that too much. This was not a big investment piece for us like it can be for some.
We opted not to get a bassinet or pack 'n' play. Our stroller (Uppababy Vista) has a bassinet, so we're actually going to use that by the bed at the beginning. We may buy a pack 'n' play down the road if we feel like we need it for him to play in, but he won't be sleeping in it so we don't need it now.
