If your LO has/had eczema...

Do you have any advice for me?  I trust you guys more than the Internet.

Her problem areas are her arms and her neck.  Her arms are sometimes really bad, and sometimes totally fine.  Her neck is always messed up-- hot, red, itchy, funky.

Thanks!

Re: If your LO has/had eczema...

  • DS had eczema patches on his body and we used California Baby calendula cream and it cleared up. He still has a patch on his neck that we try to be diligent about putting cream on, but we're not so much :(. The doctor we talked to his eczema about said to use Johnson and Johnsons baby oil.

  • Pedi told us to use a tiny bit of Hydrocortisone cream once a day for no more than three days in a row.
  • I'm not a doctor and cannot be held liable .... DS has severe eczema that has also resulted in seeping wounds.

Aquaphor (layer it on and put LO in long sleeves and pants). For really bad spots you can put cortizone .5-1% on a pad and then wrap and tape.

This, but I couldn't find .5% anywhere, so we use the 1%. Pedi prescribed 2.5% for some really tough spots. It's been a lot better since we started on that. I use it every other week or so for one day and it clears up. He gets it on his face and elbows. I worry about scaring on his face.

  • Also, she is EBF.  I've cut out dairy and nuts; anything else?

  • My lo has it pretty bad on her cheeks and in her armpits (yuck!) and gets random spots all over her body.  The pedi perscribed 2.5% hydrocortizone and said to use it twice a day in a 'thin layer'...  They sell 1% over the counter too.  He said we could try that first but it wasn't as effective.

maybe try the otc stuff and if it doesn't help ask the pedi for a perscription?

    good luck!

  • We do a couple of things. She gets a bath daily with Dove soap and than we lather her up in Eucerin. We use Rx prescribed Hydrocortisone on the red spots as often as we need to. So far, she's a lot less alligator-y.
  • California Baby Calendula cream has worked wonders!!!!

  • DS had it all the time on his forehead/face and Dr said to use 1% hydrocort. cream 2x's a day for no more than 5 days. We also were told to do this when he had a weird rash on his penis (not diaper rash!)

It's the only thing that helped, honestly. I EBF till 4.5mo and even with cutting out dairy it never totally resolved till I weaned and put him on soy formula.. :( Not helpful, I know...

I plan to introduce solids soon.  I wasn't able to see my pedi last week, when she was diagnosed; I saw another pedi in the practice.  I will ask my pedi's advice re: solids when she goes for her six month appointment.

The California Baby stuff-- do they sell it at Target?

  • I'm a pediatric dermatology PA...about 60% of my patients each day are kids with eczema. Basically, it's a condition where the skin barrier breaks down very easily, so water escapes causing the skin to dehydrate and allowing bacteria to get it, both which cause itching. The key is to keep the skin moisturized in order to maintain the skin barrier. We recommend Cerave Cream or Cetaphil cream (no J&J products ever!). We like CeraVe because it has a product called "ceramides" in it (it's the only OTC cream with this)....it is like a synthetic skin barrier, works really well! You need to moisturize head-to-toe at least 2-3x day and always after a bath or pool. Cerave and Cetaphil both have soaps/cleansers as well. For bad patches, use OTC hydrocortisone 1% 2x day for 2-3 weeks. Put the hydrocortisone on first, then the moisturizing cream right on top...it will help "drive" it in. Never buy lotions, they contain alcohol, always creams. Also, dress LO in loose, 100% cotton clothes. No fabric softener or bleach in the laundry, and use either Dreft, All Free, Tide Free, or Cheer Free for EVERYONE in the house. 90% of kids will outgrow eczema, and we do see flares during colds, teething, warm weather, cold weather, etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions!!!

  • Oh...I just re-read your OP...does DD have lots of rolls in her neck? Does she get like cheesy, white stuff in there? That's NOT eczema...that's intertrigo with a little yeast from sweat, milk, etc. that collects in there. For that, use a little OTC lotrimin cream 2x day until it's cleared up, and also use Aquaphor to create a barrier from the milk getting in there. I actually use an Rx called "Vusion" in DD's neck folds when she gets like that...it's a triple combination of an anti-yeast, and 2 barriers like Desitin...you can have your pedi write you an Rx for that too...it's great and works for diaper rashes too! That's my #1 favorite Rx to write!
