uh-oh...started a bad habit

So as I posted earlier this week, Warner has had a cold and it got better pretty fast, but by the end of the week it got bad again :-( I had him home with me on Friday and the poor little guy was all congested, looked miserable and wasn't going down for his naps well, but was obviously SO tired, so even though I've almost never done it before, I rocked him to sleep for his naps. In the past, I would always put him down when he was drowsy, but still awake and he fell asleep on his own.

Apparently, he has decided that he really likes being rocked to sleep and even though his cold is better, yesterday afternoon and today, he has refused to nap. But if I go in and hold him, he'll fall asleep in my arms. It's not that I don't love rocking him, I just don't want to have to do it every time...he needs to be able to go to sleep on his own. And he's been doing it for months now, so I know he's capable of it.

Has this happened to anyone else?  Do you think he'll go back to his old ways once this cold clears up completely? I've never really had to do CIO before and I dread that idea...but at the same time, I don't feel like rocking him to sleep from now on is a good idea.

Re: uh-oh...started a bad habit

  • We had some sleep regression when Maggie was little and she got sick.  For us it was going in during night wakings though and after she was better she did expect us to come in and hold her when she cried, so we did need to let her cry for a little bit, but the crying was only 10-15 min and she soon got the idea that she could go back to sleep on her own.

My kids never did the drowsy thing - they would always wake right back up so I rock to sleep for naps and bedtime (Molly only, Maggie outgrew that about 9mo).  It is certainly liberating to not have to do that so I can see why you want to get back there.  You can always set a limit to the crying that you will try - we recently started letting Molly cry for her night wakings and she rarely cries more than 2 minutes and her longest was 5 min.

  • I would just start putting him down drowsy again.  See how long he cries.  I suspect it won't be very long - he'll probably "remember" how to get himself back to sleep again.
