Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

2nd round misoprostol (need support/Thoughts)

I've posted a few times on here... just needing advice again if anyone has experienced using misoprostol:

My husband and I had our first child, a daughter stillborn in March at 37 weeks.  We were absolutely devestated...

This August, I found out I was pregnant.  At the 7 week US it was discovered I had a blighted ovum.  I was given Misoprostol to take last weekend.  (3 doses every 12hrs... at 600mcg each time) orally.  Nothing happened.

Called my doc Sun. am.. he had me come in for another US this past Mon. again.. empty gest. sac seen.  He prescribed misoprostol again, same dosage: yet this time I am using it buccally (letting it absorb between cheek and gums..)  I've had a slight bit of bleeding and on my second dose, but worried that it again may not be working(?)

In research online, I'm seeing that misoprostol in other cases was used in conjunction with another drug.  ( Is this why mine is not working???)

Do any of you have thoughts? I know a post last week after my first round said that the misoprostol did not work for them.. and they ended up having D&C.

Ugh.. just trying to get through this... It was also suggested that I could take it vaginally... my worry is that I've seen that there is risk of severe infection from this... Since I'm "beating the odds" lately... I'm scared to take the medicine this way.

Thoughts?? (to compound things, I'm away from my home, as my sister just suddenly lost her husband of a sudden heart attack (age 38) 3 days ago... and I'm trying to be of support to her and her two children.. while going through this as well...  I just am hoping it will take it's course soon... so that I can be as supportive as possible to her.

Should I call my doc again.. and let them know what's going on??  Any of you have a second round of this med not work.?

Thanks.. just can't believe all these events are all happening at once...

Thank you for hearing me out...

  • I am so sorry for your losses.  It is not fair that you have all this going on.  I took it vaginally.  I felt crampy right away and then passed the sac about 6 hours later.  When I took it vaginally I was not told about risks of infections which now kinda ticks me off.

  • I don't have any advise for you, I just wanted to say Im so sorry you are going through this.
  • I am really very sorry you are going through this.  I think I would try and give it a couple more days.  I took misoprostol 800mg 4 times and it took 5 days for the miscarriage to start.  I was carrying twins, but it did finally happen.  I know that the wait, esp with everything else you have going on as well is torture.  But, I know that you probably want to avoid a D&C as well.  If you want you could call and  ask to be put on antibiotics as a precaution.   I'm very sorry for  your loss and for the loss of your sister's husband.  Far too much to take in one year.  Hugs.

  • Sorry for your losses.  Sounds like you are going through a very difficult time.

I took misoprostol vaginally one round.  It didn't work, so my Ob recommended a D&C since in her experience a second round only works for a small additional percentage of patients.  At that point, I just wanted the physical part of things to be over with so that I could start to heal emotionally, so I went for the procedure even though that wasn't my original first choice.

  • I took mifepristone orally 24 hrs before inserting 4 misoprostol tabs vaginally.  My experience is here - https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/21013400.aspx

As far as I know, everything went okay.  I had a follow-up appointment with pelvic exam but no bloodwork.  My doctor seemed to think that everything was fine, but I haven't had a period yet.

  • I am so sorry for your loss and your sister's loss.  I do not have any advice but wanted to let you know how sorry I am.  ((Hugs))
  • I am so sorry you are going through this. I took 800 mg of misoprostol vaginally and passed the sac within 12 hours. My doctor never told me anything about an increased risk of infection but she wasn't very good throughout this experience. I hope the meds work for you this time so you don't have to ever go through this again.

  • I'm sorry.  I took it vaginally as well.  I was advised about the infection rate but felt that vaginal delivery was shown in the medical research to be more effective and wasn't interested in systemic side effects, thus I took it vaginally.

I don't have any advice.  Here's hoping your second round works for you.
