nbr: vent about the mechanic

Why is it that male mechanics ALWAYS doubt me?  Maybe I don't know HOW a car works, or HOW to fix it, but I can tell when my car doesn't feel or sound right!!!!!

I went in this morning and they tried to tell me nothing was wrong.  When I explained the problem, the jackass mechanic rolled his eyes at me.  then my dad came (with his own car, for something else) and when he explained they took him seriously.  WTF!

My assumption is that they were going to let me leave with the same problem, and hope to God that I returned when my car was out of warranty.  So not happening.

Re: nbr: vent about the mechanic

  • What was your car doing?

I've always been a gear head and I'll tell you it does not matter how much you know about cars men will always doubt you.  I could have gone to Wyotech or UTI to get into the auto industry as a mechanic or automotive designer, but I decided the stress of having to deal with men constantly wasn't worth it. Try getting a second opinion.

  • Oh man ... I hate car places for that exact reason. My dad is a service manager at a dealership so he is the "boss" over the mechanics and I've never had to deal with them personally. I would suggest, for the next time, not talking to the mechanics and instead talk to a service consultant or manager. Sadly, some mechanics are not trained on customer service and therefore treat people (especially women) badly. Good luck!

I used to work in the service part of a dealership as well, and the mechanics were more honest and understanding of our women customers than our service manager was.  I witnessed him boldfaced lying to women customers before and then laughing about it.  Now I know not all mechanics are as honest as the ones I worked with, nor are all service managers womanizing assholes, but that was my personal experience with a dealership.  NEVER take your car to the dealership unless it's warranty work or a recall.

  • I disagree .. obviously partly because my dad is at a dealership. But, local, hometown mechanic garages are not always honest either. I've heard more horror stories from "non-dealership" shops than anything. I just wish the OP personally knew a mechanic - that seems to make it a lot easier to trust that person! I'm the opposite - I will only take my car to a dealership because they have more training (in my experience, my dad makes his mechanics go through so much new training every year it's ridiculous) I'm so biased, lol. Dealerships do cost more money, but to me, it's worth my peace of mind.

  • I always go to the dealership, especially since the car is still under warranty.  But anyway, here is my situation:

Whenever I made a right turn, the steering felt very tight and it was making these weird noises that I can't even begin to explain.  But the thing is my dad has the same exact car (it's an 07 Honda CRV) that did the SAME THING and when he brought it in, he was told it was a problem with the rear differential.  They had to drain some fluid there multiple times, and that fixed the problem.

The last time I went for an oil change, (at the same place- the dealership) my dad told me about his car, so I asked them to check it, and they refused. I made them write this on the receipt- that they blatantly told me no and there was no reason to- this way if it did cause a major problem later on, it was documented that it was THEIR fault and not me neglecting to get the proper service.

So today this guy tried to tell me there was nothing wrong, the whole time rolling his eyes at me. UUUuuugggggghhhhhhhh so frustrating!

Oh and btw, I had them do some routine maintenance, that involved draining the fluid having to do with this rear differential thing and guess what--- the problem is miraculously gone.  Curious.

Well, I've never personally had to deal with many mechanics anyway considering my dad used to be one.  But we do have our shops around town that my dad swears by and I've always had really good luck with.  We will not touch rearends, transmissions, or a/c's.  So we have our rearend place, our transmission place, and our air conditioning guy that my dad has used for 30+ years.  I'd ask around to find reliable garages, since it's obvious this dealership is giving her the run around, as they often do.

Did they even test drive it before they told you there was no reason to check it?  If it was a fluid issue, it's almost impossible to know if it is the problem without draining it.  It may have just needed a fluid flush which is part of routine maintenance with new vehicles.  When it comes to fluids it could be a number of things, like air in the lines, being too full or too low.  I'm curious to know how the rear differential would influence how tight the car turns though?  Was the noise coming from the front or the back?  Usually when there are turning issues it's power steering or front end problems.  I'm not real good with new cars, so I couldn't be sure.   Now how to explain how the steering went away with a fluid flush for the rearend, that's a mystery to me lol.

Nope they refused to test drive it the first time!  This time, they did the same thing- no test drive, but told me there was nothing wrong.

As far as how the rear differential would influence the turn, I have no clue!  I am going by what my dad said lol.  He drove my car the other day and the second he heard that noise (from the back) and felt the tightness, he said that was EXACtLY what his car did.  They told him about this differential, drained and redrained the fluid several times, and solved the problem.

Today they didn't do ANYTHING with the power steering or front end, but they did have to flush the fluid in the rear differential.  And oddly enough, the problem is gone.

Oh and FYI, I know I already said I know nothing about cars, so it is highly possible that I am using the wrong terms here!!!! :)

This is why we go right to Honda for routine maintenance!  (The one we go to is really not THAT much more expensive than a local place would be anyway....)  Plus when we bought our cars, we got some coupon book and have tons of discounts and free services.

Well, that AND the free coffee/cappuccino!!!! LOL

Hmmm...I'm perplexed by this, I must ask my father lol

Garages suck in general, dealership or not...that's why it's good to maybe find an independent "handy man" that works on cars too.  I hate how the male mechanics think that just because they have a penis it makes them rulers of the automotive world.  I get eye rolls when I go into O'Reily to get parts for my truck.  One time I had a guy behind the counter ask me if I wanted him to go look at the part on my truck to be sure that's what was wrong.  I about flew over the counter.

  • I am usually the B**ch that will tell the mechanic to look me in the eye, speak to me not to my male friend that is giving me a ride home, and if he does NOT think my money is good enough tell me now and I WILL find another place.  I also do not authorize any work on my car without the mechanic taking me to the car, showing me the part, and explaining what they'll have to do to the car.  I have only heard one complaint from a mechanic and my reply was a fine I'll take it somewhere else.

While I'm not a great mechanic, I can do routine things to my car and understand some of the lingo.  My dad's best friend was a mechanic so I spent far too many hours playing in the garage.

  • Well, my LO is a boy, so maybe if he knew that I did have a "penis" at that moment, he wouldn't have disregarded my comments lolol
