Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Flying with an infant?

I have no clue about this.  Jonah and I will be taking a 5 hour flight in November.  How do you keep an 8 month old in your lap for 5 hours?  Also can you take a stroller on a plane as part of your luggage?

What about bottles? Do they allow water on the flight for bottles?  Also did you take the infant seat?  Would you have to purchase a seat for baby if you did so?  TIA.

Try to keep him awake until the flight. Then let him pass out. Sam slept the majority of our flight to Texas in August. We're flying again in December.

You can check the stroller at the gate. It does not count for luggage.

You can take water, but they are likely to make you dump it before you go through security. Once you get through security you can refill it and take that on the plane.

You can check the car seat at the gate also. If they have EXTRA seats they will let you use your seat for free. If not, he rides in your lap. ?

  • They will not make you dump the water, they will test it (litmus usually) but you are allowed to take it. I premeasured the water into my bottles instead of taking a big thing of water.
  • We flew with DD a few weeks ago when she was just 5 months old.?

You can gate-check both a stroller and a car seat for no additional charge. It is much safer to have LOs strapped down in a car seat in their own seat (have to buy a ticket) but DD hates her car seat and we knew that wouldn't work. Instead we bought this wonderful vest from Baby B'Air so that she was strapped to us in case of turbulence. https://www.babybair.com

I believe you can bring on water for formula, juice, lotion for baby, etc. I'm not 100% sure on those but we did bring on plenty of BM (and I've flown with BM w/o DD) with no issues. We declared it to security (in a cooler with gel packs- also allowed) and they tested it for explosives.

?DD slept on H the whole time and it went very well. Make sure he has a bottle for up and down- although crying will unplug ears, too. Best of luck!?

LOL I didn't even think about them needing a carseat when we got where we were going.  Oy.  I don't fly ever can ya tell?

  • I hear ya! We just flew to CT and it was insane how much crap we had.

Two backpacks, diaper bag, stroller (we got a cheapy umbrella one from BRU for the trip), his infant seat (because hauling the big ass convertible would have killed us) and one suitcase. It was ALL gatecheck or carryon so we looked like a traveling circus.

If you can, get a new toy for the plane. C loves new stuff and it keeps him occupied for a long time. He slept going there on both planes but out ATL to HSV flight he had a meltdown. He was tired, hot, cranky and then passed out.

I did this exact same thing.  If you go to the TSA website it says that  you cannot bring water that you must mix it with the formula before going thru security but I have never had a problem with this and have always been able to bring the water thru security.  One airport did test the water, the others didn't.

  • Thanks Mrs. L.  I think I will go get an umbrella stroller for the trip.  I would hate to have to lug around his travel system lol.  I'm hoping I can fit all his stuff and mine in one good size suitcase.  I'm dreading it already!

  • On all of our flights this past week they always had an extra seat for us even though we didnt pay for it.  Ask when you get to the gate if the flight is full. :) We took our travel system, but it folds up and travels VERY easily!

  • I just did a 5.5 hr flight alone with my 8 month old last week. I didn't buy a seat for her - so we shared one. I was terrified about it for weeks, but it all worked out great. She was very entertained with potato chip bags and granola bar wrappers (not the new toys I just bought her!). We stood up in the back galley for a bit with the flight attendants - and she loved when people went to the bathroom and talked to her.

I also nursed her for take off and landing - and she fell asleep each time for about 40 mins. I recommend getting a window seat so you can scoot on the edge of the seat and let baby stand up and hang onto the window. If you are on the aisle it's harder for them to be independent.

     Good luck

  • The best advice - try to relax!  If you are calm and excited, he is more likely to be too.  If you stress, so will he.  It helped me to remember that babies cry - kiddo did but he did calm down pretty quickly.  And people were very friendly and helpful (I was flying solo with him) - even the TSA people were nice ;-)
