Solids schedule question

DD #2 has been eating rice cereal and a container of baby food at night at dinner time - for about a month now (she'll be 7 mos. old in a few days).

When do I start adding more solids meals?  I cannot for the life of me remember how this goes... you'd think I'd never had a kid before this.

Mainly I'm trying to figure out when to send solids with her to daycare for "lunch" and/or "breakfast."

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

Re: Solids schedule question

  • I am not an expert, but what I'm doing for DD (almost the same age as yours) is giving a little in the morning when I have time, sending a jar to daycare for "lunch" (this doesn't replace a bottle, but she gets to eat with the bigger kids), and then we give her a jar in the evenings. So, she gets 2-3 a day. This doesn't happen every day, but she really enjoys it!

  • I haven't figured this out either. Right now G gets a serving of cereal during the day at daycare.  And I've been giving him a serving of fruit sporadically in the evening.  But I have to admit, I am not on a good pattern.  Some evenings we get home so late and I feel pressed for time for play, bath, nursing, etc. so that evening serving doesn't happen.  I have no idea how to add in a serving before daycare.  My mornings are crazy hectic insane just getting out the door with him.

  • It's definitely not an exact science, and I'm no expert, but this is what we did...

DD started on one meal of solids (dinner) a day at four months.  Around 5.5 months we added a second meal (so she was getting breakfast and dinner), and around 6.5 months we started three meals a day.  She's a hungry baby, and still nurses/takes bottles about six times per day as well.

She is only a couple days shy of 8 months, and this is what we usually give her:

Breakfast--oatmeal with a fruit mixed in, or oatmeal and then a fruit in her mesh feeder

    Lunch--a fruit OR a veggie

Dinner--a fruit AND a veggie, although we gave her whole wheat spaghetti with turkey meat sauce for the first time a few nights ago, so we will slowly be introducing "real" foods to her (blended or finely mashed/chopped, of course)

Basically, breakfast and dinner are her biggest meals.

  • I can't remember either so I know how you feel.  I do remember daycare prompting increased solids or I probably would have gone too slowly with it.  I would just try adding breakfast and when she gets good with that, add lunch.  I do remember that breakfast was oatmeal and fruit, lunch was a fruit and a veggie and dinner was veggie and mixed grains for a long time.
  • I'm so glad you asked this because I've been wondering the same thing...DS takes 5 bottles per day, 6-7 oz at a time, and 1 fruit or veggie in the evening between his 4th and 5th bottle. I was wondering when I should increase his solids. Some days we just seem to run out of time, so occasionally we skip the fruit or veggie, and he doesn't seem to notice that we missed it - but I do want to be more scheduled with it because I'm sure it's better for his system! I also have NO IDEA how I am going to fit "breakfast" in at home - we barely get out the door as it is! I don't know that he's awake or interested enough to eat a solid before we go - he's barely awake enough for his bottle - maybe daycare would give it to him.
