I am starting to have a little anxiety about breastfeeding. It's really important to me to try but I'm the only female in my family (or DHs for that matter) to attempt it. Since I'm limited with support, I wanted to be sure to attend a class and at least no where to turn when I have challenges. I am signed up for the class at the Washington Center but I see classes at VHC & the NOVA Lactation Center. Do you ladies have experience with any? Any thoughts on preparation for a mom to be would be appreciated!
Re: Breastfeeding Classes
You might also want to look into some resources/support groups to go to after you've started breastfeeding. I didn't take the class in advance, but I wish I had been organized enough to find somewhere to go after.
Also, you may want to look into pump rentals and lactation consultants that you can visit.
My daughter didn't nurse at first and we were sent from the doctors office to BRU to buy a pump. It was a good decision in the end because I went back to work and needed to pump, but I originally thought that I would rent a pump to see if I needed it in the beginning.
Good luck! It can be very frustrating but also very rewarding!
You'll get mixed reviews on here about a class ahead of time. For me, it was good for me to take a class ahead of time, it just made me feel better. I took a BF-ing class through INOVA and thought it was very good. It was a class that husbands go to as well, and I think it was VERY important for my DH to go with me because he became my support. The fact that he was armed with information about BF-ing made him a much better "coach" than if he hadn't taken the class. That's just for us though.
After DD #1 was born we hired a lactation consultant to come to our house. After DD #2 I went to the Lactation Center at Alexandria Hospital for a few group sessions. That was a heckuva lot cheaper than a consultant coming to the house, though, when I was a total newbie to BF-ing I thought the expensive consultant was VERY worth it.
