Need BF advise...

DD is 16 months and is still big on nursing. I'd really like to get down to nursing her only in the very early morning, for her nap and at bedtime. I've been trying to give her a sippy of milk with meals but she just tosses it away and wants only water. I've tried heating the milk and adding a little chocolate milk (with intent to gradually reduce it) but no go. Then an hour or two later she wants to nurse. Anyone else go through this? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

  • Will she drink bm out of a cup? She just may not be used to the taste of cow's milk, bm is so much sweeter. If she will drink bm out of a cup, I'd add a little cow's milk and increase it gradually until the bm is all gone.  GL :)

  • When she wants to nurse an hour or 2 later I would offer her the water or milk in a sippy or distract her with a book, or a silly game or a song.  We only nurse for naps and bedtimes so basically only in bed.

We go through those other times with distractions.

  • When DD wouldn't drink milk we added yogurt to it.  You can even add a little fruit, like a smoothie.  Then reduce until you're left with only milk.

  • So far, she won't take any milk (even bm) out of a cup. She'll take any milk from a bottle but we don't want to use them anymore.

  • I definitely do need to get better at distracting and not giving in.

  • I would give her water then.  If she is BFing 3-4 times a day, she is getting enough dairy.

We give him cheese and yogurt because he likes it.  So he really gets a lot of dairy.

Ditto that.  If she's BFing 3-4 times per day, there's no need to stress cow's milk.
