Re: Shady Grove Fertility and IVF

  • I'm sure a lot of the ladies will tell you that they were wonderful. The nurses are amazing and many of them have in fact been through IVF themselves, so they understand completely. I can't say enough good things. Do you have any specific questions? I would be happy to answer them. I went straight to IVF because I had a few surgeries for endometriosis and b/c of my age. We did two HSG tests to see if my tubes were clear and they also checked DH for male factor issues. You can see my info at the bottom of my post also. IVF worked on the second try and now I'm almost 23 weeks with a baby boy....YAY. Good luck with everything and contact me if you need more info.

I do have questions.  I also will be going straight to IVF because endo has moved my only tube away from the ovary.  I suggested surgery to fix it, but my dr. is not sure it will work.  What is the timeline?  What happens at the first appt. and beyond if you know you have to go to IVF?  I already had an HSG in March.  What happens when you only have one ovary to produce eggs?  How did you feel when your first failed?  I don't know if I can handle it.  Were you scared to do IVF?

  • They are amazing in every way. We used Dr. Widra in DC. I have a 3 1/2  year old little girl. We did one transfer and only one embryo and it worked perfectly.I had gone to another crappy clinic before SG and had all the preliminary tests done there so I just went straight to IVF since my issue was fairly easy to fix with IVF. So, they will see what tests you have had before with your other doctors, determine what other tests  need to be done etc.So, the first appt. is a get-to-know you kind of thing and then you will probably walk away with a few tests or things he needs from you.then he will set up a protocol and go from there. The whole actual IVF process is long but I had a great experience and the cycle went more than perfect so I have no complaints. I believe it's about 6 weeks from start to finish. There are a lot of appts. but I did them all before work like at 7:30am so it was easy. The actual procedures are done in the Rockville offices.Depending on what day your retrieval and transfer are, will depend if your actual doctor performs it because she/he obviously can't be on call all the time. However, all the Dr's have weekly meetings and know about each of your cases so even if your real dr. doesn't do the ER or ET, he has coached the other drs. Other than that, your nurse assigned to you will be your best friend and she will provide you will all the info. you need.It is a busy office and some people think it's too big but they have the best of everything so I didn't really care how busy or backed up they were.Do you know what Dr. you are going to?- LH

  • I've never met him but I've heard he's very nice.

    Good luck.

  • Sorry, it took me so long to get back. Ihartman* really summed it up well. I had a good experience as well and no problems at all with the meds. I did have OHSS after the first IVF, which happens occasionally, but it wasn't a major ordeal. I had to go in and have fluid drained. Sagoskin was my doctor as well, he was good. I really liked Dr. Stillman too. Lindsay was my nurse and she was absolutely amazing.

When the first IVF failed I was devastated, but I had to keep things in perspective and know that it doesn't always work the first time. Don't let that discourage you, b/c it often does too. B/c of my age I felt like I was running out of time. I turned 40 in February. If I were younger, I would have considered the shared risk program. You can read about it on the Shady Grove Fertility Website. I also, took the first appointments in the morning for monitoring and bloodwork and it worked at well with my job.

It's soooo worth it. I know I'm leaving something out, so feel free to ask away. Good luck. When do you go in?

  • Shady Grove is the best. They took me when my high FSH and severe endo and blocked tubes made my situation almost impossible and when others wouldn"t touch me. Dr. Brown at Fair Oaks was awesome
  • Thank you to everyone who replied.  We have a consult on Sept. 29.  I am still going to ask about surgery, but will probably lean to IVF.  There are so many questions and things to think about, ethics, money, emotional state...I do know I am not ready to say I am having an only child yet, so I need to explore the options.
