How Much is your Delivery?

I just got an estimate from my hospital for the delivery.  It's $8,490.  Anything to compare it to?  How much are you guys paying/expecting to pay?

Re: How Much is your Delivery?

  • I got the breakdown of what my hospital is sending to our insurance and it was just over $14K and I had a vaginal delivery w/epi.  I was floored.  I wonder how much a c/s would have cost ...ugh!! so expensive!!  I live in Indy.

  • is that with insurance?  we have a $700 copay for a hospital admission. Not terrible, considering we haven't paid for any of the care to this point.

  • Oh...we will only pay $2K out of pocket, as that is our out of pocket maximum.  Then it's cover 100% thank goodness :).

  • I don't know what the total amount would be but we are only paying a max of $300. We pay $100 per day for a hospital admission for up to 3 days; after 3 days it's covered.

  • I currently do not have any insurance, we've been paying for everything out of pocket.  Our pregnancy was a complete surprise.  I am trying to get medicaid but it's been a journey, so I am curious to see the responses here.
  • $0.  DH is military.  But the packet my OB gave me at the beginning of my pregnancy was about $9k for a vaginal birth... $12 or 13 for a C-sec.  Of course, that's all before insurance.

  • $9k of which we will owe roughly $1350; that doesn't include an epi and is just an estimate for a vaginal birth so if its a c/s we could pay up to $2500 which is our max. ?

Insurance sucks. ?At least ours does. ?But my work offers the exact insurance that DH's does so really, we have no choice.?

Ditto.  Except my insurance doesn't cover a private room, so I'll be responsible for that amount since the only rooms available at my hospital are private.

  • I was totally floored - my total charges came to nearly $30k!  I had a vaginal delivery without epi, but had to have an emergency D & C afterwards to remove the placenta.  I had general anaesthesia for that.  Thankfully, we'll only owe around $1,000 because that's our insurance out-of-pocket maximum.  DD "cost" $90k - she was in the NICU for 23 days.
  • $2000 total for our home birth (including prenatal and postpartum care)

  • We paid like $750 for all of our prenatal care, labor and delivery and post partum appts. We had a $500 copay and then it was 10% after that. We had that paid at 7 months. Now all we are responsible is 10% of anything else and I know my insurance covers the actual hospital stay at 100%. I think they epi is estimated at like $1,300. We imagine we'll end up with another $300-$400 out of pocket max.

  • I have no idea how much my insurance will be charged.  I will have to pay $250 for my admission.  If the kid gets admitted separately from me (e.g., goes to the NICU) then it will cost $250 for him as well.
  • After insurance, $200 copay for the hospital stay and delivery.
  • I will pay a $350 deductible, but we just got the patient summary this week...it was $15,145.45 for my c-section and hospital stay, and $2318.70 for Jacob's care.

Technically... if all that is available is a private they can't charge you for it.  At least that's how it has always worked at the hospital I work at.   And now that we have more privates than semi-privates in our hospital since we added a new tower they can't charge for privates at all.

To answer the OP we'll be paying $0! It makes me happy... lol.

  • 10% of hospital bill or $2500, whichever is cheaper. we've already paid my OB for his portion, that came out to about $250.

Yes  This. The insurance statements showing what was covered floor me, though!

  • Our estimate from the hospital was $840 ish.  The insurance covers 90% for me and 100% for baby.  We shall see what it ends up being :P
  • This makes my jaw drop.  I have to hand it to you ladies who have to plan for paying for your pregnancy and delivery.

In Canada I do not pay for anything out of pocket.  If I need a prescription for anything most people have prescription plans with work (I pay $16 a pay, for all dental, eye, chiro, prescription, pyschology etc) fees for both my husband and I.

OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers semi-private l & d rooms, but my work plan upgrades us to private care.

    I am in shock1!!!!!

  • I had a $500 deductible (which I met with one prenatal blood test), and I'm pretty sure LO will have an additional $500 once she's born. After that we are covered 100%. So This pg, including delivery, will cost us $1000.

ETA: My pedi just said that LO is covered under my insurance until she is a month old... so I may not even have to pay the additional $500.

  • I am very lucky to have great benefits.  We will pay close to nothing.  We haven't paid anything for b/w or u/s (even though I have to get very frequent b/w for my Hashimoto's and I've had nearly 20 u/s bc of high risk) and I've been in L&D 3x and I haven't had to pay anything.

  • Nothing, my insurance pays 100%
  • I have a $50 copay for admission and everything is covered including anesthesia, my doc, any emergencies that arise, and circumcision.  Dh has killer insurance though. My eye apt this year cost me $10 and an entire year of contact lenses was INCLUDED in that price!

  • Ours ended up costing us $6,500 with an epidural & LO having to stay an extra day to stay under the bili lights.  We had to pay cash!  Ah!

  • We will only pay 250 for being admitted. With my DS my delivery was 17,000 with epi. We ended up paying for DS being admitted to the NICU another 250... but that was nothing compared to his 50,000 bill (2 weeks in NICU).
  • I have a 500 co-pay but as part of my insurance coverage, DH and I get a medical debit card.  The payment will be paid with that card.  Best part is that I pay nothing out of pocket for our insurance.  Work covers it all.

  • $1.50

Oh, you didn't mean this pizza? Fortunately I live in Canada so $0. Some of the numbers you ladies toss around here are scary!

  • Our prenatal care + birth is $2300 with our homebirth midwife. We have a few other related birth expenses that should bring our total to no more than $2700. Our pediatrician will see the new baby in his office within a day or two of birth, and that's covered by our insurance, minus a $15 copay, so no pediatric hospital bill.

Our first birth was an induction in the hospital and a vaginal birth. My hospital bill was about $8500, DD's hospital bill was in the $2,000 - $3,000 range.
