Need some disciplining advice/ideas...

DS (will b 3 in December) and has been having terrible temper tanrums lately.  At first I tried 'ignoring' them - that didn't work b/c he'd kick the floor, furniture etc... (didn't want him getting hurt) then I tried 'explaining to him to use his words and now I'm screaming -  which is ridiculous b/c it scares the life out of him and only makes the siuation worse.  It's almost as though he's freaking out b/c we're asking him to do things on our terms and not his... yes typical behavior I'm sure but it's getting crazy.  Can anyone share some pointers w/ me?  I want the screaming to stop - I know it's not healthy all the way around.  TIA K

Re: Need some disciplining advice/ideas...

  • What are some of the tantrums over?

DD used to throw a fit because she wanted to do things herself. Things like, brush her teeth, wash her hands, go potty, buckle herself in her car seat and get plates out for dinner. Now I just let her do those things to avoid tantrums. I just decided I had to pick my battles.

  • Loading the player...
  • It ranges from all different things - can't find a certain toy, doesn't want to get dressed, washed, put shoes on, I don't do something 'quick' enough for him etc...
  • is he getting enough sleep?  frequent enough snacks?  DS is extremely unreasonable when he's tired/hungry.

  • Do you give him choices? Like if DD throws herself on the floor because she wants more french fries & hasn't eatten her nuggets yet. Then I will ask her to either eat her nuggets or else it's naptime/no treat after lunch.  She will usually pick herself up & eat her nuggets.  If she doesn't then I follow through with choice B. He may not follow through at first with you, but be consistant & do what you say you will.

  • Ditto zenya.  If he's getting enough sleep (at least 12 hours) and you don't think he's hungry, he might be the kind of kid who needs more structure.  My oldest DD still is happiest when we have a predictable routine.
