Success after IF

Is IUI or IVF better for women w/ endo?

A friend/aquaintance of mine has been trying to get PG for years,.  They are both in their late 20's.  They have done multiple IUI's..miscarried on the first, got PG on this most recent one and now is either miscarrying again or has an ectopic.  I dont knwo the full details, but am beyond devastated for her.  Any idea if IVF is better for women with endo?

Re: Is IUI or IVF better for women w/ endo?

  • I don't know if it's better as far as controlling endo and the growth, but my RE said that IVF gave us a better chance of coming home with a baby. (I think he gave us a 4% chance with IUI and a 15% chance with IVF- that's per cycle)

  • I don't know, but I'll ditto the pp's and say that IVF worked for us while IUI didn't. Hugs to your friend.

  • I went through the same thing as your friend with the M/C possible eptopic.  I did have some endo removed and was preg the first IUI cycle but that was the possible ectopic.  We ended up doing IVF after several attempts at IUI.  The only thing I have heard is that you have a better chance getting pregnant right after having endo removed.  I dont think that is gives your a better chance or worse chance vs someone with out endo.

I hope you friend is doing ok.

  • All I know is what I experienced.  I had 4 IUIs, all BFN and got pregnant on our first IVF cycle. I have stage III endo.

I'm not honestly sure, but in my case 4 IUIs failed but our 1st IVF worked.

We were exactly the same way. They did a lap and found stage II endo, and lasered it all off (so RE diagnosed it as being back to "normal unexplained IF") and we did 4 IUIs and failed; but first IVF worked.

  • Our only diagnosis was endo, and we had 3 failed IUIs and IVF #1 worked.
  • I'm not an expert but in my case the RE moved us straight to IVF because my tubes were completely blocked. IUI would never have worked for us but the first IVF was a success because it bypasses the tubes.
    Diagnosis: Endometriosis with Complete Tubal Blockage IVF # 1 Fresh Cycle- It's a girl!! 8/12/09 IVF # 2 FET- MC IVF # 3 Fresh Cycle-MC IVF # 4 FET- BFP Arriving 8/8/12!!
  • The fact that she has gotten pg several times makes me think that it probably doesnt matter for her, she may have something else going on. I don't think endo makes you more likely to miscarry, just less likely to actually become pg to begin with. But, IVF would result in the dr's being able to choose the best looking embryos which maybe would have a better chance & she could also opt for some pre-transfer testing on them too.
