  • 24 weeks with LOTS of NICU care.

  • They say 24 weeks is a good crossing point, but of course it depends on the baby and what they are able to do!
  • The "official" answer is 24 weeks, but I have to disagree with the previous posts. My cousin was born at 22 weeks and lived- he's now 19 years old. He was a miracle baby, but it IS possible if the doctors are willing to try to save the baby's life.

but they still only have about a 50% chance of survival at that point

  • 24 weeks = 50% chance of survival

    26 weeks = 80% chance of survival

  • A patient of mine is a NICU nurse and we just happened to be talking about this the other day. She said the youngest she has had was 22 weeks. The baby ended up ok, but had lots of feeding problems.  Babies at 24 weeks have a much better chance for survival though and obviously gets better with each week.

  • It also depends on your NICU level.  The hospital my sister works at doesn''t take anything younger than 28ish weeks and I'm pretty sure they are the highest level in the area.

Really?  Because there was a baby born within the last couple of years, and she was all over the national news as the earliest surviving preemie, born at 23 weeks and a few days.

ETA:  Sorry, I was off by a few days.  I looked it up and--although the reports vary--it looks like she was right at 22 weeks.  But still she was called the earliest surviving preemie.

I just looked this up 'cause I was curious and the msnbc article that I found from 2007 said that the little girl was born at just under 22 weeks and is one of the few to have survived this early.

  • At any rate, I don't know if any babies born that early would escape any problems whatsoever.  I am a pediatric PT, and a lot of the kids I work with were preemies.  Even when babies survive at really early gestations, they typically have issues that may not even crop up until later in life.  I've worked with kids born as early as 25-26 weeks, and they had some serious issues (not that all do).  Even babies born quite a bit later can end up with CP.

Bottom line is, you want your baby to stay put until at least 36-37 weeks!

  • my cousin had her baby as 25wks she was in the hospital for 2 months and bow at home and is doing great no signs of ANY problems! shes a fighter!
