Re: those who had a c-section

  • I was scared to death but had a GREAT experience.

    My advice:
*take the pain meds don't skip doses
*get up and get moving as soon as you can
*bring maternity yoga pants and maternity underwear to wear in the hospital and wear home

    GL you will do great!

  • Um, I won't lie, my first one was a less than enjoyable recovery.  BUT, my 2nd was an absolute breeze!  The difference?  The 2nd time around, I took the full dose of meds, every time, on time.  Stay ahead of the pain, and it will never catch up with you...ignore ppl who say get off the meds asap, that did NOT work for me.

I can honestly say that after my experience with Kian, I'd do it again in a heartbeat and not worry for a second.  (Oh, and during the c-section was fine both times, just don't be afraid to let the anesthesiologist how you're feeling, because he can help with nausea, etc, which is fairly common and controllable.)

You'll do great!  (Also, honestly, most people I know or know of had really good c-section experiences.)

  • I think healing may have been better for me if my LO wasn't in the NICU.  I literally spent all day there for 9 days and would honestly always forget to take my meds, eat, and even to go to the bathroom sometimes.  And before I was discharged, if no one was there to wheel me down to the NICU, I would try to walk.  Big mistake.  I would get down there ok, but be in too much pain to make it back.

So the moral of the story is, take it easy.  I'm sure it will be just as hard recovering at home with your LO (I'm assuming and hoping they will not need NICU time).  Don't try to overdo it and definitely keep up with your meds.  Don't just take them when you feel the pain, stay one step ahead.  And remember, even when your scar is looking good and healed, there is still healing going on on the inside.  My pp bleeding kept going light then back to heavy because I would overdo it.  GL!

  • Honestly, mine was not that bad.  If you have to get a c-sec, it's best to do it without laboring first, so hopefully your scheduled surgery will be a piece of cake.  I felt nauseated and my blood pressure kept going up and down during the surgery, but they gave me meds to regulate it.  The hardest part was walking the first time- make sure you try to do this ASAP.  Also, the epi was far better for me than percocets for pain, so try to do it before the epi wears off.  I let them talk about weaning me off of the epi early and this was a big mistake- keep it in as long as possible.

Good luck.  Your little one is almsot here!

  • I didn't but just I just wanted to say GL! I saw your post about the flu on SAL and I have been thinking about you!

At least you don't have to go through hours of labor, right? (sorry, not that much of a silver lining, but I'm trying!) Can't wait to welcome you to PAL and see pics of your lo! Hope delivery goes well!

  • I didn't even want to discuss c/s before, b/c I was fairly certain I was not having one..... :) Yeah. I no longer do that.

Anyway, we found out the day my water broke that DD was breech. Since I was 6 weeks early, they kept me pg for about 4 days and there was an emergency c/s (even though it was known I would have to have one) because she started to come out- literally! I was petrified! But the c/s was sooo easy!!! It hurt and I mean HURT the first day I had to get up, but the sooner you're up, the easier it gets. I did not know it would hurt that bad, but that was only the days I was at the hospital. You bleed just as bad as you would w/ a vaginal delivery. But by the time I left the hospital, again, not so bad... My recovery was so quick- I took no pain pills at home (take all of them while in the hospital!) and I was pretty much back to normal in about a week- walking all around the mall, stairs, etc. Everything healed great. In fact, my c/s was sooo easy, I'm contemplating a repeat for next time- I just can't imagine anything else going so smoothly!

  • i had an emer c/s - take the meds and get up and walk as soon as you feel comfortable... really gets things "moving"... :)
  • I labored all day (24 hours) and pushed on and off for 5 hours, so my recovery was pretty rough. I lost a lot of blood because my uterus wouldn't contract after the C/S because of all the pushing I did. So I could not get up right away and had a blood transfusion two days later. REcovery for me was tough. I think it is totally different if you have it scheduled (at least I hope so as I will have another for my next child).

I would suggest buy large underwear that hits at your waist. I made my husband go and buy me underwear a size bigger than I usually wear, and high wasted because you don't want anything to hit your incision.

     Good luck.

  • I had a planned c/s and it wasn't bad at all.  I agree with the pps to keep on top of your meds and move as so as you can.  Also, don't be afraid to say that you are hurting or not feeling well after surgery when there are a lot of people around to help you out - don't wait until they all think you're ok and leave you alone.

  • I was DEVASTATED when I found out I had to have a c-section...but I had a great experience and next go around I will have another one.

Stay on top of your meds, if you are planning on BFing - use a boppy pillow and try to nurse as soon as possible, get some huge granny panties that go up well past your belly button - you will thank me for them later :)

    Good luck girl!

  • the c-section was so not a big deal and probably the easiest part of my whole hospital experience.
