advice..do you announce pregnancy at a job interview?

I am not sure how to approach this...

We just recently found out we are pregnant, YAY!  However, I have been interviewing for a new job (I lost my last one due to complications with my last pregnancy which resulted in surgery and a miscarriage)...

Should I tell them at the interview I am pregnant or do I wait until I am hired?  I want to be honest and I am afraid it will cost me a job that I really need.  Tongue Tied

Thanks for any advice!

  • Tough call. I would not. I don't think it's an issue of honesty this early along you probably aren't telling anyone-  I would not think that there is an expectation that you would tell them.

Best of luck to you for a healthy PG!

  • Sorry, I was checking out 1st tri and noticed your post. I would not mention the pregnancy until you get offered the position. You dont know that these people will offer you a job and you are still really early into your pregnancy. If you get hired, you could tell them at 12 weeks which is cosidered normal and not have to worry about not getting the job. I did not tell my work until after 12 weeks. HTH!

I wouldn't. You aren't too far along and this will give you time to prove yourself. Plus it's illegal if they try anything. They aren't even allowed to ask during the interview.

  • I too have been interviewing and I vote no.

  • No, they can not fire you for being pregnant... but they might turn people off my wanting to hire you.  If you were 4 or 5 months maybe... but you actually don't have to disclose any of that.

  • I would not, even though they are not supposed to, they do keep that in mind when hiring or not hiring you.

  • I wouldnt.  They cannot discriminate against you if you are or arent pg.  So why tell them now.  Since you already had a m/c Im sure you aren't telling family/friends for a while either, so when  you do tell your boss its not that you were dishonest, just cautios.  Good luck at the interview!

  • No.  Do not tell.  Pregnancy is ADA protected, BUT (and this is a big but), many hiring managers would not hire you because you are going to need a lot of time off, you'll be charging a lot to their insurance, and they might think you'll just leave in 9 months.  If anyone quesitons why they didn't hire you they'd never say that it was because of this, they'll make something up about better candidates, but trust me, don't do it!
  • I would definitely wait to tell them.
You're not obligated to tell them now and once you're hired they won't be able to do anything to you when you find out.
But there's always a chance they could not hire you because you're pregnant, though you wouldn't know the real reason.

  • Don't tell.  It is not their business and it is against the law for them to ask you.  There is no way I would tell this early into the pregnancy at a job interview!!

  • no, i wouldn't tell.

did i read that right?  you lost your last job due to complication with a previous pg'cy?  how is that legal!?

  • I'm a little late, but I have a somewhat similar situation.

I accepted a position in the end of August (was not pregnant yet) and found out last week that we are about 5 weeks.  I have met/conversed/emailed my new boss several times but I have not told him yet.  I do not plan to until after 12 weeks.  I also feel bad about not being completely up front, but I don't want to jeopardize this job in any way (I start Monday).

Now...I'm just worrying what happens in 9 months when I would like to have 12 weeks off and I am not protected under FMLA.  But, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

Yes, you read that right.  It's not legal.  The entire situation has been a nightmare, involving a lot of lying and manipulating facts on her part and a company investigation on her.  It was weird because I received a phone call while I was recouping from my surgery.  Sigh...

  • You are so early that I wouldn't tell.  I definitely like to be honest as well, but I think most people would understand you not teling at this early stage.  If you were a lot further along, I would likely have a different opinion.

Some companies are likely not to hire a pregnant woman.  Even though they are probably not supposed to discrimintate, I imagine it happens.
