I know I shouldn't complain. STD covers some maternity leave for me. But it seems like the whole thing is kind of misleading. They say that they cover 6 weeks for maternity. However, really what they cover is 5 weeks because the first week is the "elimination period" during which they are determining whether you are eligible for coverage. You have to cover that week unpaid or with vacation time
Lame

Re: Insurance is kind of lame sometimes
Our STD is 8 days off before they start paying.
Ours is 6 shifts off before you get paid. Since I work 12 hour shifts, this is 2 weeks of pay.
However, since I've been on bedrest since 28 weeks, my FMLA and insurance run out a week after my due date. This means that I am not guaranteed my job and that I'll have to pay COBRA for at least a month if I manage to hang on to Bella to full term.
Nice, huh?
Our policy specifically states that the actual period of payment is less than 6 weeks

Wow, I guess I am very lucky and didn't even realize it.
Another thing I'm finding interesting-
The times allotted is the same for c-section as it is for vaginal delivery. 6 weeks (burn one first) either way. Lame, lame, lame

I suppose it's relative.... I'm the primary breadwinner in our home and make more than DH. I've also been without pay for over a month, am high risk and on bedrest so have $1000/mo out of pocket for meds, and will only get paid 60% of my pay for 4 weeks out of at least 12. Poor DH has been working as much OT as possible but we still don't know if we'll have enough left over to pay the $1500/mo COBRA.
I'm trying not to worry about it too much. The health of my baby is most important. But I will admit to being glad that her estimated weight is now over 5 lbs and that after tomorrow the docs won't stop my labor. I'm hoping to be back at work before everything runs out...
