So...uh, do a lot of people smoke at YOUR playground?

I mean like, ON the playground?

this seems HARRIBLE to me.

I'm not a smoking nazi, mostly- sometimes I even have a cigarette when I am drinking ( not around any kids, though!)

also, I can hardly resist a cafeteria lady cigarette when they're available..

Re: So...uh, do a lot of people smoke at YOUR playground?

  • No, but our playground is never busy.  If I was gutsy I would probably say something if they were smoking.  I hate for the kids to smell it.

  • No. I am a smoker and when I see people smoking at the playground, I give them the hairy eyeball (as DD says). Once there was a woman pushing her DD in the swing smoking her cigarette right next to us. I told DD we had to go on the other side because the smoke was blowing in her face. It was. I said it loud enough for the woman to hear me. She left soon after.
  • I was THISCLOSE to making a passive aggressive phone call to announce the level of trashitude happening...but these b!tches were on the scary side...

    I didn't want a confrontation!

but I don't really want my kids ( or ANY kids seeing smoking- it isn't necessary these days for a child to even be aware of it!

I think the fact that it was so commonplace when I was growing up is why som many people my age smoked (I sure did!)

  • Heck no! I would leave if someone was smoking at our playground.

eta: I would be too chicken to say anything, even if they were total posers. I would just turn my bugaboo around and speed dial the hoa ;)

  • Heck no, at least not that I've ever seen. I am an occasional smoker, but never around my kids and I would have a BIG problem if some stranger was smoking around my kids. I might have to say something.

  • Personally, I don't see why its a big deal? They're outside. It's not like they're in your house smoking... and if there are no rules at the playground to say "no smoking" then they are allowed to do so.
  • I don't mind smoking as long as my kids or I can't smell it!

I would be seriously bugged if people were smoking at the playground.

Oh- I don't think they're NOT ALLOWED- just like I don't think giving your kid pepsi in a baby bottle is NOT ALLOWED...but that doesn't make it right...

also, I think it is a totally unacceptable thing to do in a children centered environment- indoor or outdoor.

To each his own. I must be one of those "trashy" moms then, cause I would smoke if I was outside. (I don't smoke in the house, but if I'm outdoors I don't care)

or maybe you're just too punk to care?

I do not want kids to be audience to smoking- and a playground is not some place that non-kid friendly behaviors should be on parade, imo.

not that I can help it- but I'll sure as heck judge it! Wheeeeeeeeeee!

Now if I was taking them to bars...how could I complain? (although no smoking in bars here...so that point is moot.)

I am asking you on behalf of non smokers- please don't smoke at the playground.

I don't want my kids to be audience to a lot of stupid things, but I get that I can't keep them in a little bubble for their whole lives. Just sayin'.

  • Our "playscape" is inside a much larger park (also has swings/slide/etc) and to be honest I don't ever see anyone smoking.  They are smoking in the park but in the playscape I just don't see it and never see butts on the ground.

Personally, I don't have a problem if someone is smoking outside.  My kids see people smoking all the time (outside of grocery stores, Target, restaurants, etc) because in Michigan there are only a handful of restaurants that are completely non-smoking.  I don't like to have to walk through a waft of smoke just to go into a store though and usually the ones smoking right by the door are the EMPLOYEES!

BTW...I have never smoked nor has my DH.

  • I put my health and my child's health above another person's felling that they want to smoke.  How dare someone endanger the health of others at a playground?  That's selfish and sick that you would be pushing your own kid on the swing with a cigarette anyway.  I don't love the kids seeing cigarettes, especially with people that they respect and look up to, but I try not to get upset.  But having it at the playground or near children is just wrong.
  • Not usually; our playgrounds aren't very busy.   There is an inside parameter and and an outside parameter (with benches) to the play ground.  A lot of olders kids parents sit on the benches, those parents with younger children are usually in the inside.  I wouldn't mind if they smoked on the outside parameter BUT

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BUTTS on the ground!   I think I have had an occasion with at least one or both kids have picked them up despite my "yuckies" and "trash" warnings.

I smoked for several years but am coming up on my 6 yr anniversary QUIT date!

  • The only time I've seen anyone smoking at a playground around here is this one small, secluded playground.  Some of the teenagers will smoke there, but they always leave when they see me strolling up.  Evan brings his digger and loves to play with the wood chips, so we've had a few conversations about not playing with the cigarette butts.  Yuck, yuck, yuck.

Sorry, but that is trashy to blow smoke around at a playground when kids are there.

  • Our playground DOES have a sign that says "No Smoking" and people (trashy people) still smoke.  I love that.  When I am outside at the playgorund with my kids, I should be able to breathe in the fresh outdoor air, not someone's cigarette smoke!  I give them dirty looks & have come VERY close to saying something.
  • I've seen smoking at a playground twice - but the people were no where near the playground. One was in the parking lot, the other was off on the grass. It did not bother me. Now if smokey Sue was puffin' away while pushing little Susie in the swing next to my kid, I'd have an issue with it.

It's a respect thing IMO. I've got friends and family members that smoke. When there are kids around, they walk away from the kids.

  • I'm a smoker and I would never ever dare. Thats disgusting. You should be able to control yourself for the little time you are out with your kids and amongst other kids.

  • I've seen people smoking on our playground twice, which really makes me mad since no smoking signs are posted.  Sadly one day the person smoking was a park system employee (or volunteer, not sure which).  Unfortunately smoking means I have to leave because I'm highly allergic to cigarette smoke, so it ruined my time in the park with my daughter.  Really sucks since I live inn NYC and the park is literally the only option anyone has for outdoor space (where I am is all apt buildings, nobody has yards).  I'm so excited that the mayor has proposed a ban on smoking within all parks.  I almost threw a hissy fit at Central Park one day when my friend and I were picnicing with 3 kids and people sat down right next to us and all three of them lit up.  Smoking near children is never acceptable.

  • Parents? no, but neighborhood teenagers come down and smoke at the park all.the.time.

There are SO many pollutants in the air and water that people inhale/ingest on a regular basis. Why don't we ban cars too, while we're at it? The exhaust is dangerous for your health. I could keep going on and on.

If you are outside, and not sitting right on top of someone else's child smoking, I don't see what the big deal is. Really.
