DS#2 was 10 lbs 6 oz at birth, 14 lbs at 2 months, and today at his 4 month check-up weighed in at 17 lbs 12.5 oz. He's a big boy. We are trying to decide about cereal. Part of me (mostly the part that listens to all the grandparents) says he is a big boy and needs something else besides formula (already takes between 32-40 oz per day) but the other part of me (and also pedi kind of agreed today) says to wait a while longer, as he is getting everything he needs from formula right now and to wait to introduce cereal closer to 6 months.
I know this debate is on here all the time, but to those with big babies, did that factor into your decision at all?
Re: Those with big babies ...
Similar scenario here! My mom says that DS needs some cereal now because he is a big, hungry boy. She thinks that he's too big to be satisfied by breastmilk alone. (Okay, then how the heck did he get to be 18.5 lbs at 3 months?)
The pedi told me that we'd discuss starting solids at his 4 month appointment. If he suggests cereal, I'll start it. I trust my pedi and I'm going to follow his lead on this one.
The fact that he's a big baby doesn't really figure into the decision for me. If anything, I'd be less concerned about starting solids early enough for my little chunky monkey... he seems to be growing quite big on BM alone!
See, this is where I'm stuck. I totally expected my pedi to recommend starting it today, but he actually recommended waiting until closer to 6 months (I'm not sure if this recommendation was made strictly based on DS' size or a general recommendation - we went to the same pedi with DS#1 and started him at 4 months). He said there is research that indicates starting solids too soon can lead to childhood obesity, and I guess since DS is already big and obviously getting enough from formula, why even introduce it right now? And while I completely get what he is saying, that is just not what I expected him to say - lol.
Oh, and love your LO's name
