I had to fill out some paperwork today and when I went up to the counter the person remarked on how "odd" the spelling of my name was. My mother was Irish and gave me a very standard Irish name that was not popular 24 years ago but is VERY popular now. The only problem with it now is that people have butchered the spelling and now my parents look like the illiterate ones and not the other @ssholes who think it was "cute" and "unique" to throw in a random "i" or "y". Believe it or not MY spelling is the correct way.
I know I should not have been offended but as someone who is half Irish and half Portuguese I have always been very proud of my different heritages and feel like a part of that heritage has been crapped on by others that are striving to be "different."
For some it is "just" a name but for me my name is an inherent part of my culture and what use to be a pretty name now looks like a middle-school drop out couldn't figure out how to spell.
Rant over. I am going to bed.

Are you serious? oh my gosh! That looks like the sound a person makes when coughing or gagging
That's my nephew's name! lol I don't know why she didn't name him Jackson....
I really don't understand all of this intense uproar of how someone spells a name. Who cares???? As long as your name doesn't start with a "V" and end in "agina" - honestly, why does anyone care how someone else spells their own or their childs name? I've never thought of someone as "unintelligent" or "illiterate" because of the way a name is spelled - it's just not something that ruffles my panties as much as it seems to do to the other women on this board.
Please. . . enlighten me.
LMAO!

I'm an illiterate idiot who spelled her son's name with a "y" instead of the standard "i."
And I can honestly tell you I could care less what anyone thinks!
Why did I spell it that way? Because I loved the name but hate the way Gavin looks. It doesn't look like a name. It looks like two words put together... gave in. So my husband and I went with the other spelling, which is real, but not quite as common.
Shoot me.
You know what is super funny... Our LO is going to be Gavin (we WERE going to use Gavyn, but it didn't work so well with Ryder for a MN) and if he was a girl, his name was going to be Peyton... Crazy, huh?!
Oh my - I've seen so much worse. ;-) I admit to liking some y's where there are traditionally i's (Eryn for exaple) - and while sometimes I see it completely abused and misused (I'm a teacher, so I have issues with names that completely disregard the rules of the English language)..... I don't think you are an illiterate idiot ;-) Now, the mother of "La-a" (pronounced LaDASHa)...they are a different story.
LOL! Well I think the two names do go well together, so I can see why you would like them both! Peyton was a favorite of ours when I was pregnant with DS and this pregnancy we decided we would use it no matter what the sex of the baby was. I prefer it for a girl, so it worked out well. I'm getting slack on that spelling as well because many say it should be Payton but I prefer Peyton for the same reasons as I prefer Gavyn (spelling, I mean.)
In the end, there ARE some weird spellings out there. But not everyone is just trying to make a name look cute. Nor will having to spell a name traumatize a kid. My name is always spelled wrong and I'm just fine
My pastor's wife was a teacher and now subs sometimes. A girl in one of the classes was A-a. (aDASHa). The one that drives me nuts is the mispronunciation of my maiden name. I don't care much about the privacy stuff. It's Wheeler. It drives me nuts when people say Wheel-er. I know it looks that way, but if I correct you, you should pronounce it Wee-ler.
DH's college roommate's name is Aarik...ew!?
