Hi. Had 20 week ultrasound yesterday & was told I have a two vessel
cord instead of three. I am now waiting for a call to schedule a more
in depth ultrasound. I did not see anything in the Q&A section
about this and was wondering if anyone has dealt with or heard of this
before. Thank you.
Re: SUA
There is another momma here who is preggers, or just had baby, who also had SUA- maybe she will chime in.
From what limited info I know- one thing they will likely do is monitor baby's growth a bit closer than normal pregnancies. I think babies with SUA may be at risk for IUGR- but do not take that as gospel. I do know of a handful of people who have babies with it and their babies are fine.
Good luck- someone here will have some more info for you!
Hi. I have a 2 vessel cord as well. Your next ultrasound will be more in depth where they can get measurements to make sure the baby is growing adequately they will also take a look at the organs, as sometimes kidney and heart problems can be correlated with an SUA. They may also have you do a fetal echo which will also take a very detailed look at the heart. For the most part, an SUA is not much to worry with, despite all the crap you may find out there on the internet.... Most SUA pregnancies are perfectly fine, if anything the baby is sometimes a little smaller. They will do growth scans (probably every 3-4 weeks) as well as 2 NSTs a week starting at 34 weeks. The reason for this, IUGR (growth restriction) can be common with SUA so they will keep a close eye on your baby to make sure he/she is growing well.
My DD had fluid on her kidneys at the 20 week u/s as well as the finding of the SUA but the fluid has resolved since then, which is great. Also, my DD is actually measuring ahead - so not all SUAs grow smaller. Obviously you will feel better as you get more scans and more information but for the most part, try not to worry. You will get to see your LO a whole lot more and be monitored even closer by your docs!
Hello...I'm the one with all the complications prob associated with the 2vc. The peri, pedi, ob keep telling us this is a fluke thing that happened very early on within the first few weeks and will have no effect on later pregnancies which I'm scared sh*tless.
At 20wks, SUA found but couldn't see the heart well, and baby measured 10-11d behind EDD. Had a f/u 4wks later, discovered something was wrong with the left ventricle. After few echos, mutliple heart defects discovered...see siggy. At 33wk appt, baby fell even further behind in less than 10th percentile = IUGR. Ultrasound then discovered missing right kidney. Now, I don't know how this wasn't found in my previous scans.
I had growth ultrasounds every 4wks, last one at 38w1d with weight 5lbs6oz. She was measuring 34w1d. My biweekly NSTs and BPP started around 33wks. A friend of mine's first daughter also had SUA. No IUGR, but she did develop polyhydramnios and after she was born, had esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula. I don't mean to scare, just to inform. Most likely you'll get an echo to check out the heart then be monitored closely for growth since like previous posts stated, IUGR is common with SUA.
Good luck!
I have an SUA. I'll have a growth u/s monthly til month 8, then weekly with some NSTs. I also have to get an echocardiogram. There can be other problems associated with SUA; we did do an amnio before we knew we had SUA and chromosomally our little girl is fine.
After we had our appt with the perinatologist (this was after we were "diagnosed") I felt much, much better. Try not to Google it too much, because there is a lot of scary stuff out there. Best of luck!
My son (now 12 weeks) had it and it was also found at the 20 week ultrasound. My ultrasound was already done by a perintologist since I was over 35. They did the more in depth ultrasound right then and found no other problems. We elected to have an amnio to rule out chromosomal problems. SUA can be the marker for chromosomal abnormalities but it's very unlikely if there are no other soft markers.
The main thing that SUA can impact is growth, especially at the end of pg. I was scheduled for weekly NST at 34 weeks and growth ultrasounds every 6 weeks. I developed pre-e at 34 weeks and on the last growth ultrasound DS had dropped from 40% to 17% so we decided to induce at 37 weeks.
DS was born at 5lbs 13 oz. He did have to be in the NICU for 5 days for an issue totally unrelated to SUA-he developed a small hole in his lung during delivery (cord was around his neck and he was born in less than 5 minutes). He is perfectly healthy today.
The majority of SUA babies are born perfectly healthy. I agree-don't google-too much scary info out there!
