Babies: 0 - 3 Months

This makes no sense to me. Someone please explain.

Babies are not supposed to have cereal before 4 month (or later) due to their digestive systems not being able to handle, open gut, etc. Yet if a child has acid reflux then they are given cereal in their bottle to help it stay down. I understand it makes it thicker so it stays down. But what doesn't make sense to me is why is it ok for them in regards to the digestive system, open gut, etc. yet it is so detrimental to a child that doesn't have reflux. I hope this comes out right. I know what I am trying to get at but have a hard time putting it into word. I am just curoius why the difference.

  • Yeah, I don't get it either.

  • We are waiting until 6 months for cereal, but our ped said that 2 months was ok to start if we wanted to. I have never heard about digestive issues until I was on here. I worry about allergies though!
  • When the benefits outweigh the risks of giving cereal in a bottle, then it's worth it.  Rice is the least allergenic first food available, and when it's dissolved in breastmilk or formula, it's easier to digest than when prepared in a bowl with water and thick enough to only be eaten with a spoon.
  • I wish that I knew. Like I said in the other post my LO has been on cereal (first rice but that made him constipated so we switched to oatmeal which works like a charm) since he was 6 weeks old. He has such bad acid reflux that the poor kid cannot even sleep flat. He sleeps in his swing at night (think how much I am going to have trying to get him in his crib). His spit up was so bad that it was coming out of his nose. I was frantic and brought him to the Doctor who then said "absoultely put him on cereal". I didn't question it. We did it and thank God for it....really. He keeps it down so much better. Not 100% but enough that he isn't screaming in pain and is satisfied after having a bottle.

I would never put my child on cereal for the sake of having a night of rest. Even though he is on cereal he still wakes up every 2-3 hours to eat. It was doctor recommened and wouldn't have done so otherwise. No one should.

  • im assuming its a lesser of two evils thing. like making sure the baby eats and gains weight is more important than making sure they can digest? i have no idea lol
  • The benefits outweigh the risks for a kid with reflux. It's just like some pedis will say to put a reflux baby to sleep on his or her tummy because the risk of aspirating is greater than SIDS (for some babies with reflux, not all, which is why it's important to listen to your doctor).

I am glad you LO is doing better. I just didn't understand why it was supposed to be so harmful for some yet not so much for others.

  • This times eleventy million! Pedi's wouldn't offer cereal as a reflux treatment if it was going to harm a baby younger than 4 months old.
