Quick HR suggestions please

I work very PT as a nurse, and they just emailed saying they want to talk to me about my schedule. (the sudo-boss never talks to me, something is up.)

I've had to give up 3-4 of my "every other friday day" shifts this month and looking ahead to next, b/c my mom is my childcare, her dad is dying, so she needs to be with him, not Ava. I've covered these shifts WELL in advance, so there's been no issues. I show up on time and do a nice job otherwise.

I suspect they want to push me to go on-call, and give my shifts, and the couple others open, as a "package deal" to a new hire.

They can't MAKE me go on-call, can they? I'm afraid they'll do what they want anyways, and not care. It's a very self-serving company. But it's easy work, and I'm totally over-paid.

Can you collect unemployment for only working 40 hours a month? (just curious, can't say I'd bother collecting)

  • as far as making you...i guess it depends on if you have a contract or not.  they could potentially fire you if you are considered an "at-will" employee...i really hope that they just want to chat and see what's up.

    fingers crossed, T!

  • I've not done HR in the nursing realm so I don't know if you have contracts?? If not, then sadly yes, they could make you go on call.

With regard to unemployment.... possibly. In most states you can collect unemployment if you quit due to "drastic changes in working conditions or hours without an employee's consent."  The tricky part is defining "drastic." It would be best to speak with the office of unemployment to further definition and to be sure MN is one of the states that allows this.

  • well, that was quick. They called, and like I suspected, wanted me to go on call. I asked them to meet me in the middle and still give me the one weekend a month (it's 20 hours, nice money, and time away to feel useful) and that way I'm still on the books. Plus I'm acting like I still want to be there, and interested in working for them. Because it's a job. And something is better than nothing. (I can work there 9 months pregnant, can't do that at every nursing job) I did a nice dance, they placed nice. we're still friends.

I'm ok with giving up the fridays, esp right now b/c I can't work them anyways. And I will hopefully have the babysitting gig e/o friday anyways starting soon. So we're ok.

I miss working in a hospital.  I miss punching a clock and being a shift nurse. Recession be gone.

    Le sigh.
