Machines to help sleep (white noise, Aquarium, etc...)

I hear/read so much about all these things people use to help get their LO to sleep - white noise machines, that bear thing, the aquarium thing, etc.  When and why did you start using one?  We have a 5 week old and so far there's no schedule.  We put her down she she's tired and she'll fall asleep, but if she's not close to sleeping, she'll start fussing to be picked up.

Re: Machines to help sleep (white noise, Aquarium, etc...)

  • We started using a fan in the babies room from day 1. Not blowing on her or near her but just to make noise. It helps us more than her so we don't hear her little coos to wake us up.

2 weeks ago we bought an aquarium for her and it helps her when she's overtired. She just zones out and then falls asleep.

  • When the baby is in the belly they hear white noise.  It sounds like a waterfall, rain, static...  this helps LO feel more comf and secure.  I use is still, but think it did the most good for the first month.  You can really use anything, even a radio set in between stations.
  • We use the radio on a white noise station because our floors creak and our dog is loud and we don't want LO to wake up at the slightest movement.  I would like to wean her off of it soon, but I am afraid.

  • We've used the Rainforest aquarium crib toy since the very beginning. The ceiling projector is new only because he'll get bored with the aquarium. With the projector he is amazed how the picture got up on the ceiling. The toys really help him wind down.
  • We bought the Graco Sweet Slumber from Target. It has white noise, lullabies, nature sounds, night light, timer and you can hook up your mp3 player to it. DD really likes the white noise that sounds like she is in the womb. We use it at night time or whenever she is being really fussy. We started using it around 1 month, because the only thing that calmed her down was the fan from the stove downstairs. This machine is so much more convenient. It also runs on batteries so you can bring it wherever.

  • We have a Sleep Sheep and have been using it since day one.  After being in the NICU for so long, it was way too quiet in our house for K to sleep.  She needed the noise or would be up every half hour.
  • Just a regular white noise machine.  Good for all seasons and portable for travel too.  I picked it up at BB&B.  For DD, I used the waterfall noise and for DS, he prefers the crickets chirping on the summer night setting.

We have the sleep sheep also, its by Cloud B.  DS loves it and I have it hooked to his carseat when we go in stores and stuff. Puts him right to sleep.
