Babies: 0 - 3 Months

bad for baby to stand?

DD looooves to stand but I remember hearing or reading long ago that it isnt good for babies to "stand" (assisted obviously) because it will mess with the developing bones in their legs. Anyone know if this is true or just craziness?

Re: bad for baby to stand?

  • Old wives tale.

DS's pedi actually even tested to see if he could do this at our 2 month appointment.

  • I'm no help A loves it too. We just try not to put pressure on her feet by letting all her weight go to her feet. so she is standing but not really. Do i make sense? i need to go to sleep lol
  • I vote craziness.

Think about how long you'd have to make them "stand" to actually interfer with bone development.

  • It's a proven fact that too much standing can cause babies to end up bowlegged.  Their muscles or tendons, I don't remember which, can develop incorrectly and end up shorter than they should be.  However, unless you're leaving your kid in a jumperoo or exersaucer all day it's really not a concern.
  • My DS loves to stand. We asked our pedi and she said that the bowlegged issue is a non-issue.

  • My pedi said that is an old wives tale and I can let her do it as much as she wants because it will develop her muscles.
