Question for those who don't vaccinate

Why not?

This is in no way meant to be snarky or judgey, I'm just wondering your reasons. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Question for those who don't vaccinate

  • DS had a horrible reaction to his first round of vaccines and we have since found out that I am highly allergic to the antibiotic filler that is used in all vaccines.  Because allergies can be hereditary my dh, dr and I made the choice to delay and then to very selectively vax later if need be.

This kind of comment makes me want to streamline the gene pool.

I'll be honest, I'm having a particularly hard time with the not effective comment. A lot of the diseases we were vaxed for (and still continue to vax for) are all but gone.  How does one explain that?

Not looking for a big ugly debate - that's NMS - but that comment is quite perplexing.

As for not being safe?  Some people do indeed react, but the vast majority don't.

  • DH and I have both showed allergic reactions to vaxes when we were young.  Because of that we'll still do them, but only one at a time and if there's ever a reaction we may have to skip some of them (depending on what the Dr. thinks is causing the reaction).  But I had such a horrible reaction to a booster shot that I couldn't walk for a week.  I don't want to do that to my child.

Exactly. To say they aren't effective without qualifying the statement is just... wrong, I think. There are theories that some these diseases were going away on their own before the vaccines were introduced, but I think the vaccines had the biggest success in keeping these diseases from spreading further.

Effective-really?  Smallpox, polio, diptheria, whatever do you mean?  Have you had them in your neighborhood lately, nooooo.

Smallpox was eradicated because of vaccines.

Poor Dr. Salk is probably rolling in his grave.  And using all of his limbs to do it.

You know, because he never got polio.

  • I researched extensively into this before my DS was born.  I managed to pull my own ideas together and decided to create my own vaccination schedule for my son.  The main reason I have decided to do this is because children's immune systems are very immature during the first few years of life and I believe that they have a difficult time fighting every single disease injected into them.  I think it is much more effective to seperate the vaccinations to give my child time to create a proper immune response.  There have been studies that suggest the excessive toll it takes on a child's body can create auto-immune problems in the future because of the overstimulation of the immune system.  I also breastfeed and my DS is not in daycare, so his exposure to disease is very minimal at this time.  I do plan on vaccinating my DS with vaccines I feel he will need, but only when he is most at risk.  FYI, some health care providers will tell you that vaccines are required for school entrance, but some states allow exemptions.

Yeah. Because smallpox and polio just got tired and went home.

I've heard some dumb stuff on the Bump. But this is just "wow."

Like Irish Twins dumb. And that's pretty impressive. .

That reference just never gets old.

  • I know for those who have had allergic reactions, not vaccinating is appropriate. But for everyone else, children should be vaccinated. I did my undergrad in Toxicology, my masters in Forensic Tox. My undergrad term thesis was on Childhood Vaccinations. There is more risk in not getting vaccinate than there is in getting the vaccine.

Now, I do not believe we are ready for the H1N1 vaccine. It has not had enough testing done. But I won't tell people not to get it when the CDC reccommends it. I am not getting it. Just the regular flu vaccine.

Again, to each his own. Some children don't get vaccinated and are fine. Small pox was erradicated in the US, but there are people (who don't like USA) who have vials of it. That is scary. Diptheria is spreading in some areas in the US again. I didn't have the chicken pox vaccine and got chicken pox. My sister got the vaccine and didn't get the pox. I am all for vaccines
