Sunday evening, I decided to take things into my hands and see if I couldn't help things along
I had remembered reading in midwifery books about evening primrose capsules and caster oil, and thought, what the hell. Stopped at the pharmacy and picked them up. Everything said it would not work if my body wasn't ready.
Sunday night, I took 3 caps and inserted them in my vagina, and went to bed. Nothing happened except my shorts were full of the oil. The next am, DH dropped DS off at school. Around 10 am I said to DH, "Do you think I should take tis castor oil, or wait til tomorrow?'' He said, ah, well take it now. So I did.
I was expecting ferocious diarrhea in about 3 hours. By 12:30, I had a decent sized runny poop. Then I posted to the board a bit, sat on the couch, etc. After a while I began to get disappointed since I wasn't pooping. By 1 pm I did not realize this at the time, but I had a frenzy of nesting take place. I had finally replaced the covers to the car seat, swing, and bouncy I washed weeks ago, vacuumed the stairs which had not been done in 5 weeks, needing to get the car seat in the van, and, I actually packed my hospital bag, and grabbed some clothes for the baby to pack.
At 2:40, I woke DH up to pick up DS, and told him I had a "couple of crazy contractions". I went in to pee, stood up and felt a trickle, which I assumed was more pee, that happened a few times. By the time Ben and Benjamin got home, I was in full blown labor, about 30 minutes later! My contractions were coming every 3-5 minutes, lasting between 1-2 minutes and were SO intense. I do not ever remember contractions like that.
I asked Ben to call my MW since I could not talk through them. SHe is SO mellow and laid back, she said well tell her to go get checked "if she wants to". So I am pacing and breathing through the contractions as best as I could while Ben takes a shower...then as if that wasn't bad enough he started freaking shaving, WTF?! I didn't say a word, just paced, panted, and breathed.
We get in the van, and he starts running next door to tell our neighbor I am going to the hospital, WTF are you crazy!?!? So I yelled out to him, and he reluctanly came back. I guess all those stories about guys losing their minds when the women labor are true.
The ride to the hospital was awful. I was swearing, hitting the door, and going out of my mind. I get to the hospital, and they get me in a room, and check me. I was 3-4 cm, then as she did that, my water broke all the way, so I knew I was staying. There was a small part of me that wondered if I would get sent home or not. Within 35 minutes, my nurse is still doing my admission stuff and she checked me again, I was between 8-9 cm, and ready to push. I decided I had gone au natural long enough, and had a spinal block done. Oh My God. Within 5 minutes, I was a completely different person. I apologized to my nurse for being so biitchy, though they said I wasn't.
She let me labor down for about 1 1/2 hours, so I could get a break, and her and my MW could do paperwork. At 6:30 it started to wear off, by 6:45 I wanted to push. I guess by 6:50, I started to push. I pushed through about 5 contractions in less than 15 minutes and he was out. I could feel that, it was amazing. His shoulder got stuck a tiny bit, and he pinked up right away. I got a tiny 1st degree tear with a few stitches. My MW and RN were absolutely amazing, could not have asked for any better!
He nursed right away, and is doing fantastic. He is really cute. Benjamin is doing really great too. He is so gentle and loving it is great.
His stats were 9 lbs even, 21 1/2 inches, born 9/14 at 7:04 pm.
