what can this be? need "cue" help

i am generally very good at reading my sons' cues. obviously it's even easier with #2 than it was with #1.

however, lately #2 has developed this weird thing he does. he will be up on my shoulder and bucking back and forth, slamming his mouth against my shoulder. he'll do it sometimes after he nurses and sometimes before. sometimes when he is ready for his nap; somtimes when he wakes up from his nap.

any clues?

  • Any chance he may be starting to teeth?  When my daughter is teething she will sometimes gnaw at my shoulders.  I think it comforts or soothes the likely soreness in her gums.  As she continued to do it once she had teeth in it was not as fun and I would have to offer her something else to bite.  I'm not sure if the behavior is similar or different than what you are describing but thought I'd try and help.

  • hmmm...O does something similar, although it's more of a mashing his face on my shoulder and aggressively rubbing it back and forth.  In his case I think it's definitely a tired thing.  He does it either pre-nap or after waking up from one, still sleepy.  Not sure if it's the same thing, though.

  • M does has just started doing this when he is tired but needs to burp.  It took us a while to figure out it wasn't just really wild rooting : )   He also does it in a not so frantic manner when he's just in the mood to mouth something and doesn't feel like using his own hands or clothes.
