2nd Trimester

Will you be donating your baby's cord blood?

I remember with DC #1 they asked if i wanted to donate her cord blood. And i was all for it. Why not try to save another life, since I cant afford to store the cord blood myself.

Will you be donating? (Most hospitals will ask you)

  • Yes - we will donate to the public registry if the counts are high enough, and if not, we will donate to research where I work.

I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
  • I asked my dr. about this at my appointment on Monday and apparently I can't donate at my hospital. All the local banks want their own nurses taking the donation and apparently they don't work with my hospital. Which is weird to me because it's one of the most prominent in the area.
  • There aren't any local hospitals where I can.  I checked.  Otherwise, I definitely would.
  • We want to but are having trouble finding somewhere to donate here in the Nashville area.  My hospital doesn't do it but my doctor said that they can if I have the kit or have it sent to them.  I just don't know where to get one.
  • I tried to donate last time I had a baby and they acted like I was crazy.  They made it sound like it was a LOT of trouble and said something to the effect of they might donate it if they could.  That was going on 5 years ago.  Maybe things have changed since then.  I will ask about it again for sure.

  • We will be donating to a public cord blood bank.
  • We would except ours is not considered 'good' enough.

If you have spent more than 3 months in the UK, you are not allowed to donate.   I also can't donate blood for the same reason.  I don't know what the rules on that are in the US but that is the deal in Canada.  It is due to mad cow disease (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease).

The irony is that I am a vegetarian so there is no way I have Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease....

This just made me really sad. I wanted to donate, but I spent the past year living in London.

  • We were actually just talking about this--we will definitely be donating.
  • If I was you I would check.  That is the rule in Canada but it may not be the same in the US.  Hope it works out for you!

  • I want to...I don't know if my hospital does that or not. (Now I am adding this to my list of questions for my doctor at my next appointment!)

  • We are planning on it. If you ever need some you can check there. Why not, especially if you (like us) cannot afford to bank.

Here is a link! There is a form to download; just look over it and take it to your OB at your next visit. Talk to him/her about it, be warned however that he/she may charge to collect. Just make sure you get the forms in on time because if you don't you may not be able to donate. HTH.

  • I plan on it! I have been a regular blood donor since I turned 18, going back the exact date I'm next eligible to donate. My little brother was born 13 weeks premature back in 1990 and needed 2 or 3 blood transfusions to save his life. I think that blood, whether your own or cord, is an easy and wonderful gift to give!
