2nd Trimester

Awful & Interesting DR Appt.

Today was my 1st day meeting the Dr who will deliver LO. Usually I see the midwives, but today I was graced by his presence. First off-the nurse walks me back to weigh me. I step on the scale...and she says...Let me try again. This cant be right, when she sees my weight. Same weight as the 1st time, she looks at me like I am a complete fat a$$ and says...Well honey, dont freak out. I wasn't. She was. B*tch.

Then. The doctor comes in. Things are going fine until I tell him about my restless legs. I had them in my previous pregnancy..and wanted to know if there was something to fix it. He has that I can take a couple, COUPLE?! Soma's before bed, but that I might feel like a "junkie" in the morning trying to take care of my 3 y.o. Instead-maybe I should have a couple glasses of wine, or a MARGARITA, to help me sleep.

Im okay with a glass of wine once a week, 2 glasses a night, or a margarita, daily, seems insane.

Im walking out of the office totally in disbelief. I'm sure he is a good doctor, I have heard nothing but wonderful things about him and he is highly rated, but that just totally took me off guard.

 Vent over.

  • Yeah margarita somehow doesn't sit well with me either. Is there another doctor in your practice you can consult with?

  • Wow, that is pretty surprising.  I would be hesitant to have a drink at all, maybe I'm paranoid.  The nurse was a b*tch, why couldn't she just write it down and move on?  I  hope the RLS gets better for you.  My dad usually does deep knee bends to help with his, but I don't know that that would really be an option for you.
  • I am so glad he's not my dr!  I miss tequila so much that if anyone with a medical degree said I could have a margarita I don' t know if I could resist the temptation!!

  • Unfortunately, he is the main doctor at the practice. We live in a small area, and this is the only hospital with a birthing center. Unless he is out of town, or whatever reason, there is an AWESOME doctor that is his back up. She rocks.

I'm defenitely not going to take his suggestions, but I feel a little stuck with no other options. I guess I just suck it up and do what I think is right. Hopefully he doesn't have any more interesting remedies to offer.

My DH looked at him and said...."are you serious?" and he goes right on to say that its perfectly fine. At one point he was saying that if I was out at a party, or a get together, and the wine or beer tasted good, to go ahead and have another! It won't hurt anything.

  • Can you ask him about phenergan? They put me on it for nausea and it also seems to make me sleepy. I'm usually pretty fidgety/restless but have noticed on this med I'm not and I don't feel like a junkie the next day.

I can't believe he said a couple drinks a day, that definitely doesn't sound right. My OB is pretty relaxed in that regard and he said a few a week was fine, but spread out. (I'm not touching it at all though).

He was trying to think of the name of a medicine to help for my lack of sleep due to the RLS, but couldn't remember the name. Go figure. Ill have to check this out and see if they can phone in a Rx for me. Or of course, I can just have a nice cold Margarita, with extra tequila. Ha.

  • it does sound odd for an MD to reccomend to a pregnant woman to take muscle relaxers and alcohol

I think some sleeping meds (ambien, etc) can be relatively safe in pregnancy but I would definitely not touch soma. I think that's a pretty strong muscle relaxer unless I'm mixing my drugs up and I had to come off all of my muscle relaxers while we were TTC (I use them for migraines normally).

I dont think he meant take them together...but even alone..its kinda crazy. I didn't know Soma's were even safe to take during pregnancy.

  • Well, as far as that nurse goes ... she should have a long discussion with the office manager about what NOT to say to patients. And I'm sorry you have a limited choice of doctors!

  • Maybe his good recommendations are coming from the ladies who love margaritas?? Or maybe he was craving one himself??
  • Oh, goodness. That sounds like quite a practice. Hopefully he's an awesome cheerleader in the delivery room!
