Question about first appointment

I scheduled my first appointment at 8 weeks today and was told they don't do an ultrasound at the first appointment.  A little disappointed but what can you do!  My question is will they still listen for the baby's heart beat with a doppler or possibly not?  We were hoping to hear before we told our parents the news.  Just wondering what others' experiences were..

Re: Question about first appointment

  • Most likely if they can find it.Smile

I got a vaginal ultrasound.....but after that, just checking for the heartbeat and measuring.

  • It is normal to listen to the hb at 12 weeks and after.  The baby is typically in your pelvic bone until then.  GL!
  • Strange...I get an u/s at the first appt (8wks) to determine EDD.

Not all offices to early u/s's.  My 2 previous ones did - this one does not.  Different docs do things different.

I know I've seen lots of women here getting ultrasounds done around that time too.  I guess I will just have to patiently wait for mine! Booo.

  • I wasn't scheduled to have an u/s but they ended up giving me one really quickly since they couldn't find the hb on the doppler (it was too early and I'm a little fluffy), so maybe they will do that for you if they have u/s machines in the office. Otherwise I think it's just your standard b/w, family history, etc.
  • I also got an vaginal ultrasound to determine EDD
  • Mine did an u/s because she said it was too early to hear it by doppler.
  • With pg #1 I had no ultrasound until my nt scan at 12 weeks.

With pg #2 I had a real quick sort of ghetto u/s at 8 weeks and saw the heartbeat.  It wasn't a 'real' ultrasound she just rolled a mini machine into the room and took a quick look.  I have another u/s scheduled for 11 weeks for my nt scan.

It's not common practice to have an early ultrasound.

  • I can't remember when they could hear the heartbeat with pg #1 but today they tried super hard to find the heartbeat with the doppler and couldn't find it.  She even went inside of me and sort of pushed the uterus up towards where the doppler was to help and they still couldn't hear it.  She just said it was too early.

  • i had an U/S and saw our bean and teeny tiny heart beating but didn't hear it.
  • you typically cant hear the HB with a doppler before 12wks. A transvaginal is almost the only way. I wonder why they dont do one to date the pregnancy and check for viability....weird.
  • Well, not at mine. They just asked questions drew blood made me pee in a cup gave me a gift and sent me home lol. It was what they said was a nurse visit. They said my real appointment and u/s would be next week. So idk.
  • I'm in the same boat only mine is at 9 weeks. Every hospital is different but I didn't hear DD's heart beat till the second appointment. I'm going to a military hospital though which is not the best, although it could be worse.
  • Ours did not. We simply filled out paper work and went over family history.
  • my doctor's office doesn't do an u/s until 20 weeks, but I was told we'd still be able to hear the heart beat at the medical history appt (so I assume they'll use a doppler??)

  • My first appt was with a nurse and we went over family history and basic info.  She scheduled an appt for two weeks later with my ob and she said at that appt we'd try to hear the heartbeat on the doppler.  I'll only be a little more than 9 weeks then, so I don't know if we'll actually get to hear anything, though.

  • My previous practice routinely did only one U/S at 20 weeks for uncomplicated pregnancies, so I only got one U/S.  My new practice (we've moved) does 1 to date between 8-10 weeks and one at 20.  Just their policy.

  • I don't have my first appointment until Friday (YAY!) but from the phone call setting up the appointment I didn't get the feeling they would do either. But I'll let you know after I have the appt! I'm guessing it's not usually until the 12 week?

Many only do one at 20weeks.
