2nd Trimester

I'm still eating horrible!

Before getting pregnant, I was a lacto-ovo vegatarian.  I stuck to whole grains and mostly organic foods and had sweets about once a week.  We rarely ate out and I walked my dogs regularly.  During the first tri, I had horrible m/s, so I pretty much ate anything that sounded good at the time.  Unfortunately, that meant I changed my eating habits drastically. . .and I still can't get myself back on track.  And with the heat, walking has not been an option for me.  Argh!

Anyone else feel like this?  Aren't you supposed to take better care of yourself once you're pregnant!?!?

Re: I'm still eating horrible!

  • What is your definition of eating "horribly"?

If you haven't packed on 50 lbs and your blood pressure is fine, I would not worry too much. Your body knows what it needs. I sometimes feel like I am eating too much crap, but I just try to balance it out. Some days are bad, others are not so bad.

  • Don't beat your self up about it...at least your eating. In my first tri I felt nauseous allll the time and ate whatever would make me feel better. You gotta do what you gotta do. Now though, I try to maintain a healthier diet.

  • As long as you're not eating fast food for every meal and sitting on the couch all day you're probably fine.  Smile

My eating habits haven't changed much from pre pregnancy -- whole grains, lean meats, protein, lots of vegetables and fruits, limited sweets.  However, now when I get the hankerin' for something "bad" I just give it to myself because it's not worth the stress of longing for a turtle brownie from Panera when I could just eat it and call it "baby's extra calories."  I eat more fruits than veggies which used to be flip-flopped, and I'll take a juicy burger over chicken breast if given the option on many occasions.

As long as you are getting proper nutrition... don't be too hard on yourself.

  • I'm right there with you. I cannot stop drinking 2-3 cans of Coke a day and don't even get me started on candy. I seriously feel like I'm a 6 year old kid after Halloween, eating only junk.

Sadly this is how I ate pre pregnancy but with alot of fast food. I have no idea how I stayed so skinny. Tongue Tied

  • I was dead set that I was going to be the perfect pregnant person and only eat foods that were nutritionally valuable to the baby. That went completely out the window once I hit second tri. I do try to not eat any processed foods (aka pre-packaged), so if I want cookies I bake them myself so I know the ingredients. At least I'm eating butter and not hydrogenated oils. I also make sure I read the labels of all packaged products I do buy so that I don't put anything I can't pronounce and/or don't know what it is into my body. I guess that's going to have to be good enough!

  • i was a vegetarian before i got pregnant... not so much now just because of my cravings and because we can't eat so much fish. all i want is protein right now.

i had (and still have occasional bouts with) horrible m/s too. but i couldn't stomach too much outside of the basic broth, salads, and fruits. so that's pretty much what i stick to now...

i eat way more fruits and veggies now then i did pre-pregnancy so i guess that's good!

  • I am sooooo there with you!  I try to make good choices, but I have a nightly ice cream habit that alone would be fine. It's the afternoon gummy bears, the pastries, the paninis...

I have good days and bad days.  My plan is to keep working out, that way with luck I can lose it all!

  • During my first trimester I was only able to keep down the things that looked good to me so I must have eaten Chick-Fil-A nuggets everyday for at least 8 weeks, well that and ice cream!  If I tried to eat anything else I was sick.

I think you should listen to what your body is saying.  I agree with the other posts, if your not gaining a ton of weight and your vitals are good I'd say keep on a keeping on!  Smile

  • I try to make good choices as well, we eat very lean meats (mostly chicken and turkey) very rarely do we get red meat.  But I can't seem to get a real liking for veggies.  I am trying so hard to eat fruits and vegetables but it's so hard! I don't eat sweets much, occational cookie here or there or cake or ice cream, but not all the time.

  • Don't feel bad...I can't stop eating tortellinis today. I guess this baby is Italian.

  • I am pretty much on the same boat as you, including being a lacto/ovo vegetarian.  At 21 weeks pregnant, I have already gained 22 pounds.  I know this is in large part due to the sweet tooth that I have and insatiable hunger.  I am getting a little better as the weeks go by.  I am trying to cook healthier meals and indulge in less indulgent sweets. I figure it eating home cooked whole foods has to be better than all of the unhealthy fast/convenience foods out there. Here are some of the things I am doing:

I made chocolate chip cookies the other day and substituted applesauce for 1/4 cup of the butter and used half whole wheat pastry flour.  The cookies turned out perfectly moist and yummy.  I haven't dared tell my husband yet cause he has really enjoyed them as well and if I tell him he will say "I knew something was off" even though he has voiced his opinion already about how they turned out so great.

I make a casserole early in the week like vegetable lasagna, that can be reheated whenever I am feeling to tired to cook.

I make my own pizza with home made half whole wheat dough (pick up Artesian Bread in Five Minutes a Day for a quick and easy dough that can be multi purposed).  Top off the pizza with lots of yummy veggies and a part skim mozzerella and serve with a side salad.  (I buy bagged salads to save myself time and energy).

I am packing healthier snacks for work.  This includes dried fruits and nuts, protein bars, fresh fruit, & carrot sticks.  I also have been getting more 100% juice drinks (naked/odwalla) that count as a serving of fruit and/or vegetables.

Good luck to you, and hopefully some of my suggestions can help.

  • I hear that!  I used to eat very lean, but since becoming pregnant I have become a snacker.  The way I learned to control it was that I allow myself a sugary snack at a certain time, a piece of fruit for a snack at a certain time and a granola-type snack at a certain time.  It lets me know that I am still in control and that my snack will come sooner than later!
