Would you join the board at DC's school?

I've been thinking about joining the board at DD's preschool but when i told my husband about it he said it was a bad idea?!?!?!?  But after speaking with the President of the board, im guess MH is not alone in his thinking as currently the "board" has only 2 members.  What's the problem?

Re: Would you join the board at DC's school?

  • I would not, but to me DD's preschool is really just daycare to me.  I think that the time commitment would be more than I want to do, considering she is only in school 8 hours a week.  In elementary or older school, I would consider it.  Legally, you can be sued for being on the board if something happened, so you would want to make sure that your liability was limited.

Sued personally?  I never thought of that.  That would probably be a deal breaker.  My DH is a lawyer, Ill have to get his advice on that.

  • It is a huge commitment and it doesn't seem terribly rewarding to me.  I also hate endless meetings (and those meetings seem to be awfully political and catty at times).  I'd rather volunteer directly with the classroom.

  • I wouldn't join the schoolboard of any school.  I'd hate it, it's just not my thing.

My thinking is that it would feel like deliberating in jury duty all the time.

  • I've never been on a school board but I was President of a Parent Council at my kids' private school and a member of the PTA of my DD's high school.  Both were very rewarding and not that time consuming.  It was nice to have first hand knowledge of things and to listen to valid questions from other parents.  We were the ones that would take issues to the school board.  lol  I was never worried about being prosecuted (sued) for anything and I don't even think you could sue a school board member unless that particular person did something to you/your child (and can't even think of an instance where that would happen).  With the private school we were able to institute a new uniform policy (the parents loved it).  They used to have to wear navy pants or jumper (even the high schoolers) and RED shirts/blouses.  YULK.  We got it changed to navy pants, skirt OR jumper and light blue OR white shirts/blouses.  Do you have any idea how hard it was to find red blouses??  I started sewing a lot when my oldest DD was in Kindergarten so I could make her some cute red blouses with ruffles.  lol
