"flutter" question for repeat moms

being a first time mom i dont know when i should start feeling movement. ive heard people say that before they feel kicks they feel a flutter sensation- when did the flutter start for you?

ive also heard that first time moms dont really notice it as much but the past few days i've been feeling something (i'm 11 wks) but honestly it could just be gas...

Re: "flutter" question for repeat moms

  • I didn't feel anything until at least 20 weeks or so.

  • I think it clearly started for me around 16w with DS.  I remember everyone saying it was early, and I wasn't absolutely sure until they got stronger and stronger, then, looking back, I knew for sure it was the baby that I was feeling even very early.  For me, the early stages felt a little like bubbles.  I think it depends partly on how in tune the mom is to her body.  Just like early pg symptoms, some just 'know' sooner.  Maybe it is the baby, maybe not, you will probably only know when you look back in a couple of weeks and the feelings went away (just gas) or got stronger and stronger until there is no doubt it's baby.  For now, I would just imagine it is the baby.  Seems like the more fun way to go :)

  • With my first I don't think I started feeling anything until around the time of my big u/s at 18w.  This time around I've started feeling flutters already and they began about 11.5w.  At first I thought it was gas for sure and I was just nuts, but then it happened again and again.  It isn't regular yet and some days I don't feel anything, but I have felt them maybe 5 or 6 times now.

  • At 11 weeks, its gas.  The earliest I've heard of someone feeling the flutter is around week 15 (ok, I've heard of earlier, but I don't believe them!).  At week 15, your fetus is only around 2" long, by week 15, it has doubled in length.  Hang in there, it will happen although not for another couple of months probably.
  • 15wk to the day I felt a distinct tapping that was the first time I was sure I felt the baby. I never trusted flutters to not be gas.
  • I felt DD1 about 13w and DD2 about 11-12 weeks, so it IS possible!
  • Noone believes me but i swear i felt it last weekend
  • its gas....im nearly 21 weeks and just started feeling some movement! and im a first timer too! just wait it will come
  • i had one flutter, almost like bubbles bursting at a little over 11 weeks. . that i know wasn't gas.  . . only felt it that one time in that sensation and then didn't feel really movement until around 23-24 weeks.
  • I have a small frame but didn't feel DD until 19 weeks or so.

  • just gas you are feeling.  i didn't feel (and know for sure) my first flutters with #1 until 17 weeks. it's really easy to get gas and flutters confused the first time around.  you will eventually be able to distinguish the two
  • I wouldn't describe it as a flutter. For me it was like a pop and I felt it around 17 weeks or so. I felt it from the outside a few days after that.

  • Your baby is 4.1 cm from crown to rump (just over an inch and a half), much of which is head.  Sorry, but you're just feeling gas.  I didn't feel DS kick until at least 17 weeks or so.

  • I was 22 weeks. I was at my big u/s at 20 week and I could see her moving but still couldn't feel her.
  • With my first, I felt the flutters around 15 weeks, and could feel her from the outside by 17 weeks.

This time, I have been feeling the flutters for over a week now, sometimes every day, but sometimes it is every other day.

  • 16 weeks I could feel it and at 17 you could actually see her bumping my belly - hubby was shocked :)

  • I didn't feel DD until about 21 weeks, I'm sure it is just gas.

  • I felt my first just before 12 weeks. But it wasn't even flutters at that point, and i had to hunt really hard for it -- lying on my back, perfectly still, trying not to even breathe too hard, and I'd poke at my uterus.

The response I got was more of a squirmy feeling. The closest I can come to a description is that it felt like there was a small cluster of furry honeybees that were crawling all over each other inside me.

It was definitely not gas, and it was clearly in response to the poking I was doing. So I was sure it was the baby, and the feeling just got stronger and more distinct as the weeks went on, and finally graduated to flutters around 14-15 weeks and kicks around 16ish weeks.

I've been feeling tiny squirms again with this one, but honestly I'm not paying quite as much attention to exactly when things start. :)

  • Sorry this irritates me. Just because some people don't feel things until later in the game doesn't mean everyone is the same. Some women do feel things earlier. I just hate when people's query's get written off based on one persons experiences.

It is true that it is usually around 15 weeks that you begin to feel things, but It usually takes longer with your first. So maybe you just are very in tune with your body.

  • With my first it was about 17 or 18 weeks.

Gas and movement can feel just alike. Long after DS was born, I would have phantom baby kicks that were just gas.

  • It was 12 weeks for me both times.  And yes, it was baby, not gas.

  • It is pretty safe to say you can't feel anything until well into 2nd tri. My first movement was 15/16 weeks.  You'll know it when you feel it!

  • I was about 16-17 weeks when I first felt a flutter. I knew it was the baby because it wasn't something I had ever felt before...it almost was like I was being tickled from the inside. It just felt almost like what you can imagine as popcorn popping...a very light and fluttery pop pop pop. Sounds stupid, but that's how others have described it as well.

  • It was around 15/16 weeks when I felt the flutter and then baby kicks around 17 weeks. I think hubby could feel her around 19 weeks.

  • Most first time moms feel flutters around 18-20 weeks. For me it was 18 weeks with my first, 14 weeks with my second.
