Babies: 0 - 3 Months

wow i am so glad that I breastfeed.

There is no way we could afford the cost of formula!

Its ridiculous! Surprise

Re: wow i am so glad that I breastfeed.

  • I was just thinking the same thing. I figured that with the cost of my pump, accessories, etc I broke even on cost 2 months ago.

  • Lol! I just about posted the same thing in that post.  But I couldn't figure out how to word it properly!

Our budget would be hurting for sure!

  • I know....I'm having supply issues now the DD is in daycare, and the price of formula scares me! It is a big reason I wish I could continue EBM, but I'm not sure it will work out that way:(
  • I agree, this is one reason why I tried so hard and made it through the first 2 weeks!

  • It is...it's insane.  Although I wish I could have BF'd longer, I'm happy with the 4 months I was able to do so.  DS goes through a can of powder every week.

  • Me too. I didn't with my first and the difference in cost is amazing. I also get formula from my MIL, who has a connection with the post office, and they give us the sample containers of formula that are sent to addresses that don't exist and end up in thier trash pile. It's worked out great for us so far.

aw I didnt mean for that. :( I was just saying that if something ever happens to where I cant BF, we are going to be so deep in debt with the cost of formula. eek!

  • Word. We only buy one can a month for when DH is taking care of him. We could not manage if that was all he ate.

  • I wish I could BF and I think about this each and every time I buy a can of formula. Although, I am happy to know we have alternatives like formula, I cannot imagine what we would have to do before there was formula and if a mom could not BF. So I happily fork over my $14.99 a week :)

Try formula feeding and paying for daycare... But we do what we have to as parents, right? Wink

This. And I have TWO to formula feed. UGH.

  • We have it pretty easy considering we only spend $50 a month on his formula.  I wish I could have breastfed.  My milk never came in...so I'm just thankful he doesn't need to be on a special kind, otherwise I don't know what we'd do.

seriously! Daycare is so expensive here in SOCAL that I couldnt even afford to go back to work if i wanted to haha. Being a teacher would not even come close to covering the costs of daycare.

Although, I have to say... it worries me that your budget is so tight you can't afford an extra $100/month if you needed to.  What are you going to do as your baby gets older?  Solid foods, more clothes, shoes when they start walking, toys, medicine, school supplies...  Babies only get more expensive when they turn into toddlers and then little kids...

I think there's a big difference between the 450$ a month and a 100$ a month.  Sure, the 100$ a month wouldn't make a big difference in our monthly budget, but 450$ a month while I'm not working right now, would make a pretty big dent and we'd definatly be forced to reevaluate certain financial goals.   I'm pretty clueless when it comes to formula in general at the moment, but it looks like 450$ is not the norm.  But having kids is all about adapting and being flexible right?  We all do what we have to.

i was a little misinformed about the cost is all. I saw that post where the girl is spending $450 a month on formula! ouch! We could handle the cost if we needed to but we are in a tough financial situation at the moment and really  rely on breastfeeding.

  • This is why the formula checks and coupons are so precious!  I do some major trading on here so I never pay full price for a can of formula...

    BTW...your DS is just precious!

  • Whoa!  $450 a month for formula!!  Surely not...  We would spend around $80 if I didn't have coupons...so we actually spend less than that.  It is totally manageable if you do it right.  Maybe some kind of specialty formula??

  • Yes, similac alimentum is a special formula for babies with milk alergies/spit-up issues, etc... It's usually used as a last resort after trying many other formulas.  And no, $450 is not the norm but my baby eats a little over 40 oz a day and that stuff is twice as expensive as the regular similac. I'm hoping to try him back on the regukar stuff in a month or so to see if it works.  He's 3.5 months old now and for a while he would throw up just about everything he ate and my pedi suggested to try this, so far it's golden!
  • This is why I wanted to BF but it took forever for my milk to come in and then I had supply issues because I couldn't afford an electric pump right away.  Then I thought about it and by the time I bought a decent electric pump, storage bags and bottles, and everything else that goes along with BFing, it'd almost equal out to FFing.  So I think unless your planning on EBFing for a very long time, it's about the same.

I BF, but wanted to mention (in case you don't know), that specialty formula, such as Nutramigen and Alimentum, are somtimes covered by insurance companies. So, if you haven't checked, I'd definitely contact your insurance provider to see if some (or all) of the cost could be covered. That's a ridiculous amount of money to have to spend on formula.

  • only if you need a special formula...if you lo can take generic, its not bad at all...dd is on parents choice  (walmart brand ) and its less than $12.00 a can, which lasts us over a week because her daycare also supplies that same formula..so we spend less than $50.00 a month on formula...you probably spend more than that on one dinner out !

and i agree with the person who said if you can't find an extra 100.00 a month in your budget you have bigger problems !

  • It is VERY expensive..

Part of the reason why I'm sad that breastfeeding didn't work for us. But it is what it is.  At least my DS is thriving.
