sorry to bring this up. I haaate even seeing this topic.
I read an article the other day at the pedi's office. A mother put her 4 month old down on his back to sleep. When she checked on him in the middle of the night he was face down and had died from SIDS.
So now my question. First, I guess I was under the assumption that once a baby is able to run themselves over to their stomach they would be able to turn themselves to their back again. But given this story, how likely is it that DD will start turning herself over from her back to her stomach while sleeping deeply and not be able to turn over again? This scared the crap out of me.
This is why I'm not going to read about the scary chit that can happen. I take every precaution to protect my baby from SIDS so beyond that there's nothing more I can do. Reading these stories scares the crap out of me so I'm not going to do it anymore!
Re: hate to do this - SIDS question
I don't know the answer to your question, but I thought I would tell you that my pedi told me this week that since DS can and does roll from his back to tummy to sleep its OK for me to put him on his tummy when I put him down...
This is the problem with trying to associate tummy sleeping with SIDS. No one knows what causes it. The baby could have, and probably did, die from something unrelated to being able to turn it's self over.
What exactly was the point of this post, other than to scare the crap out of others for no reason?
Yeah. . .I'm gonna be needing an angelcare monitor. That does it.
If they are face down, and even though their face is not being smothered, what possibly can happen is the level of oxygen goes down and the level of carbon dioxide goes up. Small babies don't register in their brain that this is happening and so little by little they lose their air supply and...
As adults, if we are on our stomach and this happens, our brain registers to us that we need to roll over.
I know, i hate reading stories of babies that have gone as a result of SIDS.
I look at it like this - we have to do what we think is safest for our LO's, but ultimately it is out of our control. God sometimes calls his little ones home too soon, in our opininion.
Well said. My LO has been a tummy/side sleeper from about 4 weeks on...
This. We have one and I highlly recommend anyone who gets extremely nervous about SIDS to get one. It will help you relax... It's amazing. DS will definitely be a tummy sleeper... right now at just 5 weeks he prefers to sleep on our chests on his tummy. He won't sleep on his back. Once we transition him to his crib we will have a rough time I'm sure. Once he starts rolling over and I can't prevent him from tummy sleeping, knowing the angelcare monitor is at work will help me sleep at night!
Oh, I am so, so sorry for your loss. I can't even fathom.
No one really knows what causes it. DD has been rolling onto her tummy to sleep for a while now. I still put her down on her back per my pedi's advice, but if she rolls over to her tummy, he said there's no real reason to worry about it.
Why was the article in your pedi's office?
this is true! this is what i tell myself.
DNK - it was some parenting magazine article in the exam room.
Exactly this.
I lay LO on his back to sleep, keep the fan on in his room and check in on him often. Other than that, I just have faith that he will be safe. That may not make sense to some, but I agree with Mickey- it's out of our control.
