3rd Trimester

Is anyone not working after baby?

If so, what do you plan to do for you?  I was planning on working part time (2 days a week) and now it looks like this will not be approved by my company.  So, I think I may be staying home with the baby.  I am so excited for this although I feel like I will need something outside of the baby to keep my sanity.  Just wondering how it has worked out for any non-working full time moms?  I know that I am extremely blessed to not have to work but the idea of not working kind of scares me??

Just looking for some advice :)

Re: Is anyone not working after baby?

  • I am not going to work for a few months.  I have already notified my boss that I will be leaving after the baby is born & will have finished my masters degree in december, so I am taking a few months off before I look to go somewhere else.

  • I don't think I will go back to work.  I'm still up in the air.
  • I'm staying at home after the baby, but plan on serving 2 or 3 nights a week. That way we have extra money on top of DH's salary.

  • Me!  I'm so thrilled to be able to stay home with my baby.  I'm just going to loosely schedule my days so I don't sit in front of the computer all day.  I'm going to be spending a lot of time working on my long-neglected Etsy business, which should even bring in a little income.  I'm just excited to be around for my little one's life :)
  • I don't work now and I won't be working about #2 comes. But just a few tips. You can always talk on the SAHM board, they have stuff to do sometimes and tips to help save money, etc.?

I recommend getting out. It's so easy to take baby out. Go to lunch, go to the mall, go shop. Just get out of the house at least once or twice a week. ?Once the baby gets older is when I'm talking about.. you won't want to be heading out when the baby is just a few weeks old :)?

Also, it's fun once they're old enough to get them into some sort of program, like kindermusik. I think they can go when they're around 6 months and that will be good for you. :)

You will be plenty busy at home with the baby, so don't worry about missing work, lol. I definitely don't! I only worked part time, but I went to school. I'm much happier now :) ?

  • I own my own business and plan to continue that after the baby comes, but I am also planning a HUGE business growth/opening a second business next summer so that kind of scares me.

I went from being a full time worker (50 hours/week) to being a full time stay at home mom just working on my own business every now and then.  It was actually ALOT of fun.

If you can afford it, its very rewarding.  The time you get to bond is amazing and you will find you come up with so many projects to do that you are rarely sitting around doing nothing.  It's wonderful!

  • i havent been working since may, and i dont really intend on going back any time soon after LO gets here. baby and i will be spending a lot of time traveling back and forth cross country to visit FI (her daddy, obvi) while hes working, as well as headed to hawaii a few times to visit my sister. i'm so blessed to have the opportunity to hang out with my LO all day, watch her grow, and travel with her... SUPER excited :)
  • I live in Canada so I'll be taking the full 52 weeks of maternity leave offered here. DH makes more than I do, and you only get 55% of your salary, so it would make no sense money wise for him to take any paternity leave.

I haven't decided if I'll be returning to work once the year is up. It depends on if we can make a budget work. My time home with baby will also have to included doing everything I can to cut corners in our budget and see if we can afford for me to stay off, or even work just part time to get the same income as I would be getting on mat leave.

But I do plan on going to stroller fit classes and bringing LO swimming on a regular basis, just to get out of the house. I'm sure I'll need something to keep me sane, so we'll have to mix it up a bit!

  • im staying home after babies are born and feel lucky to be able to do so. however i am also a little worried about lack of adult time. i think i will join a mommy group to have some adults to talk to, but i would like SOME conversation in my life to have nothing to do with diapers or feeding schedules or what not. we'll see how it goes.
  • I live in Canada so I get 52 weeks paid maternity leave and can take up to another year unpaid.

Currently the plan is for me to take about 18 months, but we'll go from there. Then I'll work long enough to be eligible for benefits again (~6 months) and hopefully have baby #2. At that point I'll be a SAHM because daycare is too expensive to make it worthwhile.

I'm sure I'll find things to keep me busy!
