Got my Mei Tai finally and its a fail

Not the Mei Tai itself, i don't think, but I can't seem to get it on right. I want it for the back carries, but Trent doesn't sit in it right. I am trying this carry (High back carry)  but he doesn't sit low enough in the carrier, his legs don't splay out enough around my waist, and the fabric seems to be chafing his chubby little thighs.
What am I doing wrong???
This is breaking my heart, because I had such high hopes for this thing.

  • I don't have a Mei Tai, but I have an Ergo.  I know when I first started wearing DS in the front carry (haven't tried the back yet), his legs were to small to go out and around me like they were supposed to.  When I did more research, I found I could safely tuck one of his legs in Indian-style.  It worked well and now he can sit comfortably with both legs out.

  • I think he's probably at that awkward in between stage for mei tais where he's too big for legs in but can't do legs out.  Can you get him legs out on the front?  I also found that kiddo was actually comfortable with his legs out even when I thought he might not be.  I did that same back carry when kiddo was two months or so - here's a video that shows him in it (but not how I got him there - lol) https://gallery.me.com/meredithnsinclair#100248 - he looks so tiny!

The pp suggestion was good; you can also take a piece of string and tie it around the bottom of the body of the mei tai to cinch it in a bit - that way baby doesn't have to get around so much fabric.

And definitely try front carries first just to get a sense of how he should be sitting in it.

What a great idea! I'll try that. The front carry has been moderately more successful, but he squawked before too long. I might have to focus more on the woven wrap back carries... and those are hard. I am new at them.

  • FWIW it took DD about 4 days to get to the point where she settled into the mei tai easily and quickly.  Compared to the ring sling where I swear I get it out of the diaper bag and she smiles in anticipation.  I think there's a baby/mommy learning curve with all carriers but the mei tai takes a little bit of practice to get it on, get it tied, keep it tight and as you noted getting LO situated.  We're not at the point of back carries yet but I guess my point is don't give up!

  • I'm just glad you finally got the thing!  Hopefully that means mine isn't far behind.  I actually just sent her a message asking about its whereabouts since it has said shipped for almost 2 full weeks.
