Babies: 0 - 3 Months

s/o formula costs....

didn't anyone's lifestyle change after having a baby?  people complain about the cost of formula, etc...  but i find that after we had the baby, we spend less money eating out and hanging out on the weekends...  YES, formula & diapers is costing $150-$200 per month, but we used to spend WAAAYYYY more than that before our baby on entertainment & senseless stuff.  I feel like we've become more budget-conscious and have way more $$$ left over than we ever did before.  Anyone else feel this way?

Re: s/o formula costs....

  • I completely agree! I feel like we save better, and our relationship has gotten better since DD.

  • I agree. The time I stayed home, allowed to really tighten the budget, and we are better off than before the baby.
  • I don't think we gave up quite as much as we thought we would to make up the difference, but yeah, our lifestyle changed. We do get take-out quite a bit more than we used to, but we don't see movies (for example).

  • I agree, We dont go out as much and arent spending our money on crap that we dont need anymore... I cut coupons and actually look for deals now . i never did before
  • We don't spend money like we used to, but then again, we are making less.  I'm on maternity leave and I get paid 70% pay now, and then after Xmas it's going down to 50% pay. (Which I am very very grateful for).

We pay more in rent since we moved into a bigger apartment (with two bedrooms) in a more expensive neighborhood that is very family friendly and has great community activities.  It was a cost we were more than willing to take.

What's suffering the most right now is our savings.  We aren't putting as much as we used to away.

  • yup....it sort of evened out for us......we don't but a lot of formula since we mostly bf, but we have tons of poopy dipes and go through many dipes in a day.......

we used to eat out a lot more though....

  • I wasn't really meaning to complain about the formula, more of a "holy cow!" statement.   But I agree, we budget way better now, but on the other hand I just graduated from college last year so it's not like I ever felt rich...I went from paying for school with little spending money to SAH with 2 kids and spending it in other ways.  Basically, it just moved around a little.
  • i don't think Formula is that much a month. maybe 100 bucks. i used to spend that on other stuff pre baby that don't need now.

    no biggy.

  • I'm amazed at the amount of money we are saving by not going out, etc.  Add in that my lunch breaks are now spent pumping so I can't eat lunch out and we're saving a lot of money.

  • Figure this one out:

I'm on mat leave and getting 1/4 of what I normally make from my government mat leave pay.  DH is working like normal.

And we have more money now than we did before.

So we're definitely more budget conscious now.
