1st Trimester

What would you do... (teachers especially)

I found out that my leave can potentially carry over into early September of next year.

However, I want to begin the school year with my class. It would be weird to be to have someone else begin the year.

I am thinking of just stopping work at the beginning of April and taking some time to myself inseatd of having it carry over into next year...

Hummm... still need to look into this...

  • I'm lucky because my district gives us six weeks, and my due date works out perfectly so I can just take off May and half of June.  IMO, I would do what you said and stop working at end of April.  Our district would ask for a dr's note saying that you needed to go out earlier, but I think that would be better than having to miss the beginning of the school year.

  • EDD is April 25 and my break is the beginning of April...

I think I can get my doctor to write me something if needed.

  • I would go for that then.  It always makes for a rough year when it doesn't get started the way you like :)

  • My district gives us 9 paid weeks.  I am lucky enough that my due date works out to I think 8 weeks before the end of the year.  I probably could use that week in the fall of the next year, but like you I don't want to miss out on starting the year with my kids.  I may just scrap that week.  It comes from my sick days, so it's 5 extra sick days I could have for the next year.  With a baby, I am sure I'll need those sick days!!

I would say just stop work early and relax before  your due date. Enjoy the time to yourself to rest and relax before the baby comes!

  • I would definitely go for the week before you are due, if I were you! Having taught a bit I agree with how nice it is to be there at the beginning of the year to set the tone :) GL!
  • I would definitely want to come back at the beginning of the year.  How awesome to actually get paid time off.  I only get my 12 sick days, but with all my dr. appts leading up to when baby actually gets here, I'm looking at a whole lot of leave without pay.  Ugh!  I guess I need to move where you all are!  :)  Good luck!
  • I hate it here...don't move here...eh!

I have some short term disability that I signed up for a long time ago.

  • I'd start the year off with them as well.  It's really tough to get them under control if they start off with a sub who lets them go wild because she doesn't care since she's not going to be there for very long...
  • I'm due in May, so my leave carries into the next school year as well. I don't plan on extending it though...I want to start the school year. I have a feeling I'm going to go early though (2wks early with DD) so I may cut out after 'testing season' is over in April.
  • I know it would suck not to start off the year wtih your kids, but I think it would be worth it to spend your maternity leave WTIH your baby. Unless, of course, you are too exhuasted to teach toward the end of your pregnancy... You don't get much time with him/her when you have to go back to work..  I know it's difficult to start teaching after the kids have already learned the routines that the sub set. Do you know of a good sub that can take over for you? That might make you a little more relaxed about it. I already booked my sub for my leave in April because I love her so much. If you don't know of a really good sub, ask around because that might make it easier.

  • We were attempting to have a babt 6 weeks prior to the end of school so I would have as much time as possible with our lo.  As of right now I'd only miss about 2 weeks if I work until my due date.  I have to use my sick days, which I won't have many of after all the doctors appointments.  If I was able to carry over maternity leave into the next school year I would take it.  Dealing with unruly 5th graders will be difficult, but the extra time with your lo will be priceless.
