need to switch to cloth diapers.. suggestions..please

Hey ladies!!

DD has sever diaper rash and we were told tonight it is time to change to cloth diapers. I have been searching for what is best so far the "G" diaper seems to be the leading favorite.. Can you recommend what you use or tried and failed? Are these "G" diapers really the best??

Thanks!!

  • I love the G's, but they are currently out of the cloth inserts. I use the BG inserts in them for now, which works pretty well.

  • There's a great cloth diaper post in my blog, The Baby Standard (link in siggy).

  • There is one mom in my mothers' group who used fuzzi buns, they are sooo cute. The eco-friendly family board is basically all about cloth diapers, they can help you pick something good.

  • Ask more on the eco friendly board. I don't think g diapers are a favorite. I rarely hear good things about them.

There are a million different options. Here's a good place to start:

The best thing you can do is order one or two of each type, or several different brands of the type you think you like and figure out what works for your baby and for you. What works for one baby won't work for another necessarily, and you'll find what you prefer, too. I personally use fitteds or prefolds and covers most of the time, but I have a lot of different brands. Don't buy an entire stash until you know what you like.

There are trials out there (you pay a deposit, try the diapers for a few weeks, then return them and you know what you like).

  • We use BumGenius. I think the general consensus on the EFF board is that G diapers are leaky, but I have no personal experience with them. We love our BGs though!

  • I use Bum Genius and prefolds from Cotton Babies with Thirsties covers.  At night I stuff an additional insert (a Hemp babies newborn prefold) in a BG up in the front.  I've tried a bunch of fitteds but really the prefolds are just as good and not much harder.  Good luck!  Like pp said-check out the eco friendly family board.  They have a site someone can link you to with a lot of info.
  • The makers of BumGenius diapers (very popular choice)  just came out with a new diapering system similar to G Diapers.  Go to cottonbabies.com to see their new "Flip" Diapers.

I love the BG3.0s I use, but I have yet to really get into solids with DS so I may change my mind when I am dealing with stinky solid poops.  My daycare has no problem with the BG3.0s if that is a concern for you.

  • Fuzzi bunz are my favorites followed by thirstes fab fitted and covers, I also use happy heineys, BG 3.0s and bummis superbrite covers. The only cloth diapers I have that I'm not crazy about are the Thirsties AIOs
  • My siggy has info on what we use.  I think a trial is a good idea as what one person loves, another hates.

I really have heard nothing good about G diapers though.

  • I have used unbleached prefolds from Jillian's Drawers, Kissaluvs, and unbleached prefolds from Green Mountain. I prefer the prefolds to the Kissaluvs -- for some reason, the Kissaluvs irritated my DS's skin. I think the Jillian's Drawers pfs were more absorbent, but GMD has more sizes. I use Snappis and Thirsties covers (size 2, which is adjustable so you don't have to keep buying new covers every few months). I wash them with Charlie's Soap.
  • We use Bum Genius 3.0 pockets, but we have a couple BG all in ones, some happy heinys, and fuzzi bunz.  I used g diapers briefly in the beginning, and I felt that they just didn't fit well.  Plus, having to try and remove the insert was a pain sometimes.  I really like our bg 3.0s, but as pp said, we haven't had any stinky solids poops yet.  Most of the EFF board loves prefolds or fitteds it seems, but they have been super helpful over there in getting me started!
