Gestational Diabetes?

I flunked my 3 hour glucose test today, which I guess means I have gestational diabetes. I'm still waiting to hear back from the doctor and to be honest I am getting a little freaked out! Aside from needing to adjust my diet (goodbye dunkin donuts), I have no clue what this means for me and the baby.If any of you ladies been diagnosed with this and can give some insight, I would be most grateful.

Re: Gestational Diabetes?

  • There is a lot of good info on "high risk pg" boards. When I failed my one hour I just went to that board and read back through pages and pages of GD posts. It gave me some good info.

Please read the old posts before making a new one. Someone may have already answered a specific question.

  • it's actually not so bad, say goodbye to your sweets but otherwise it's definately liveable.

you'll have to test your blood sugar 4 times a day, as soon as you wake up, and then once after each meal, you'll have to eat snacks between each meal as well. depending on your nutritionist, you may be given a set amount of carbs that you have to eat. I've found it's a lot of trial and error to see what works best for me (example: i can eat a lot of corn and others can't, but i can't eat a lot of potatoes)

basically what you want to do is prevent your blood sugar from staying at a constant high and you want to keep it within a safe range

  • I had GD too... boo =(

I have to test my sugar levels once a day.  I miss sweets and I have started walking a bit more to burn off extra sugar in my blood.  I have a strict diet which I adjust because I couldn't follow it and doc said as long as I stay away from extra sugary things and my levels are fine that it is okay.  It sucks but babies are doing fine and that's what counts.

  • I found GD to be a blessing in disguise.  It really helped me plan ahead for all of my meals and snacks, encouraged me to exercise and ultimately kept excess weight off during the pregnancy.  I was back to my prepregancy weight in 6 weeks (not pre-pregnancy body though Stick out tongue)

Most women can control their sugars through diet and exercise.  Some must take insulin (injections).  You will have to test your blood regularly (no big deal).

I ate 3 meals and 2 or 3 snacks a day.  I ate every 3 hours or so.  I also found that drinking the correct amount of water really helped keep my numbers level.

I was bummed out at first, but I swear, after the pregnancy, I was pretty glad I got the diagnosis.  Like I said, it kept me on track.

    It'll be fine, you'll see!

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Other than the diet changes there are a few other risks involved with GD. I had diabetes before getting pregnat so the diet thing was nothing new (although I had to start insulin recently). The biggest risk is that too much sugar will cross the placenta. This can cause your baby to get to big and cause need for early delivery or a C-section (although this isn't always true, my baby is small for age even with my diabetes).

Another thing that was never mentioned on any of the posts I read that my doctor told me is that if too much sugar crosses the placenta your LO might get used to processing so much sugar that at birth when they don't have that sugar constantly their sugar might be low. They will test this and might need to give sugar water or an IV. My OB told me this so that if they rush her off right after birth I wouldn't be freaked (I'm glad she warned me Smile)

Good luck with everything, like I said these are just some risks associated with GD, not definates, just listen to your OB and nutrionalist.
